When the price of uutomobiles be
came such that tiieir purchase became
common among men of means Harvey
Williams bought a single seat run
about.
Curing the tirst year of possession
he made almost constant use o f the
machine.
Then the novelty o f the
thing.wore off. and in the live follow
ing years lie seldom rode in it. After
that the modern and speedy touring
car became the vogue. Ilarvey once
more came under the spell of the au
tomobile craze and quickly decided that
he must have a touring oar.
Rich as he was. he concluded that
his was not the wealth to foster two
motors
He was determined to sell
the runabout.
iUsed it foi s.iie and
awaited a purchaser. He waited two
weeks, and yet none came. The end
of the third week brought a probable
buyer
"Now. what 1 want in a machine is
speed." this individual began. “ I can't

afford the price of a new machine, but
noue the less 1 want speed iii the sec
ondhand nffair I buy. What speed do
you claim this nmahout Is capable of
making?"
Ilarvey wa n e d between truth and
a possible sal«
If be gave its speed
as fifteen in. s an hour truth would
triumph, hut tin- opportunity of a sale
would be lost.
"W ell e r —you know our city ordi
nance is very strict as to speed, and l
have never given the auto a trial on
the country roads. But. say, it makes
the city limit speed o f ten miles very
easily. Oh. yes, very easily!”
"Urn! Then you don't know its ex
act speed?"
" I t —it was guaranteed to make thir
ty miles easily iu an hour,” Harvey
replied in a very weak tone ot' voice.
“ Trove it and I'll take the auto off
your hands." said the man
"You 've
got to show me.”
"H o w can 1 prove it to you? Do
you want to take a trial spin?”
"N o
1 haven't the time. Bring me
absolute proof of its speed and I'll
take the machine without further ado."
The three days following this con
versation Harvey spent iu vain at
tempts to hatch some scheme that
would successfully deceive the proba
ble purchaser. As mentioned before,
the attempts were in vain, and on the
night o f the third day he gave up in
despair.
On the morning of the fourth day he
met a friend in the street, and the
friend inquired about his success in
disposing of the runabout.
Harvey
told him all.
“ W hy," exclaimed the friend, "1
know the very man that can put this
sale through to a successful linish.
Robert Howurdsou is his name, and
he is a specialist extraordinary iu ad
vertising. His office is iu the Bearin-
ger building."
H arvey found the office and the man.
Into Ilowardsou’s sympathetic ears he
poured his story.
“ What price do you ask for the auto
j mobile. Mr W illiams?” Ilowardson in
quired after hearing Harvey through.
“ One thousand dollars.”
“ H e is willing to pay this price for
a secondhand automobile?”
“ Perfectly willing. Says the old ma
chines have the material in them:
they wear better."
" I am not quail lied to pass judgment
upon bis assertion. Now, Mr. Williams,
how much are you willing to pay me if
I succeed in selling your runabout?”
“ Mr. Ilowardson, my fighting blood
is up
When I first decided to sell I
was anxious to sell. Now I am deter
mined to be rid o f the thing. 1 will
give you 50 per cent. or. to put it plain
ly. $.100 "
"I would consider myself a robber
were I to accept this amount. I f I
succeed I will ask for $150. is this
satisfactory ? 1
“ Indeed, yes "
"V ery well
Now. can yon spare a
couple o f hours tomorrow forenoon?”
"I think 1 ct u arrange it.”
"Good! Call for me here at 0 o ’clock
in your runabout."
Promptly at the hour designated Har
vey drew up before the Bearluger
building, and Ilowardson clambered
into the seat beside him.
"W hat is the thing's absolute limit
t r speed. Mr Williams?" Howurdsou j
inquired.
" I t will make eighteen miles In an I
tiour. hut it is an awful strain on the
engine.”
“ Take a given speed o f eighteen
miles per hour and a policeman to de
termine tlie speed, and his imagination
will make it thirty miles. Now, when
I say the word give it the lim it” _
