Eyewitness shares tale of dramatic rescue
Cannon Beach Gazette
Cannon Beach visitor Terrance Jor-
gensen was among onlookers at the Sat-
urday, Jan. 12, Coast Guard rescue of
two surfers at Indian Beach.
A pair of surfers paddle out against
a north flow before finally making it to
the break.
“They we were hit really hard and
one fellow washed in towards the view-
ing area after paddling back out look-
ing for his partner,” Jorgensen said.
“We never saw the partner again. He
was apparently caught in a fast current
that washed him into the cove and on to
back side fo the rock where rescue took
place.”
At that point, an onlooker called 911.
According to Jorgensen, one surfer
made it to shore and along with another
surfer and ranger frantically worked
their way out to a break in the rocks, but
were unable to determine if the partner
was there.
“The surfer then dove in and swam
way out to allow himself to be washed
back in the cove to try to help his
friend,” Jorgensen said. “It was an anx-
ious 20 minutes or so until the helicop-
ter arrived and we were finally told that
they were spotted on the rock.”
