Affordable housing one of
our greatest challenges
Thank you to the Cannon Beach Gazette
for reporting and editorializing on matters of
concern to the public. Your attention helps
involve and educate all of us, and it’s an
essential part of our representative democratic
process and of a robust community.
One of our greatest challenges is the lack
of affordable and available housing. I’ve been
advocating and working to address housing
issues for years as a community activist, as a
Clatsop County planning commissioner, and
now a county commissioner.
Currently, I work with state and local hous-
ing agency people. I also sit on the board of
the regional Community Action Team, which
addresses housing needs and solutions in Clat-
sop, Columbia, and Tillamook counties.
I also co-chair the Association of Oregon
Counties’ housing subcommittee, which
works on defining needs and developing solu-
tions for housing shortages all over Oregon.
This is a problem all over the state, and we
need good teamwork with partners all over the
county, the region, and the state to solve it.
I’m passionately devoted to the well-being
of people here, beginning with housing needs.
As a community, we can and must work
together and use the best in all of us to create
conditions that result in meeting our housing
needs.

Vote Tiffiny to help create
affordable housing
working the same service job for years with
stagnant wages and struggles to ensure their
basic needs are being met. It is heartbreaking
when young, hard-working Astorians don’t
make enough to pay their rent and utilities.
Nobody should have to choose between having
a roof over their head or paying their power bill.
I didn’t believe things could change until I
met Tiffiny. For those of you out of the loop,
Tiffiny is running as a democrat to be our rep-
resentative in Salem. Tiffiny is eager, ready to
work on our behalf, and has the values to fight
for folks in our community that need help. For
years, Salem has been dragging their feet on
passing legislation to help create affordable
housing. I know Tiffiny will bring the fight for
affordable housing to Salem and be the cham-
pion we need. That’s why I plan on voting for
her in this upcoming democratic primary and
in the general election.

counties are bringing against the Oregon De-
partment of Forestry in an attempt to increase
the amount of timber that can be taken from the
state forests. Besides being an environmental
rip off, it is costing the Oregon Department of
Justice millions of dollars in taxpayer funds
to defend the state. This after the state and the
counties agreed, less than a decade ago, to a
forest management plan that balanced timber
harvest and environmental concerns.
John has an excellent environmental
record, having served as the president of the
North Coast Land Conservancy. I urge every-
one concerned about protecting our forests for
future generations to vote for John Orr.

Vote Tiffiny Mitchell to
lead the North Coast
I first met Tiffiny Mitchell through North
Coast Indivisible. Like me, Tiffiny joined
because she knows we need to stand up for
progressive policies that work for all. She
always brings her passion, her smarts and her
fearlessness to the table as part of the leadership
of Indivisible.
When Zinke talks about trying to drill for
oil off our beautiful Oregon I know Tiffiny will
fight in Salem to protect our coastline. When
ICE comes into our communities and pulls
apart families, I know Tiffiny will stand up for
those most vulnerable. And when the federal
government strips away funding for services that
so many people here depend on, I know Tiffiny
will ensure that Salem picks up the slack.
I plan on voting for Tiffiny Mitchell for
representative of District 32 in the Democratic
primary this month and you should, too.

CITY HALL VACANCIES
The City of Cannon Beach is advertising
the following staff vacancies:
PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR –
Population 1705. Salary range $73,000 – $88,000
plus excellent benefits. Unique coastal residential/
resort community located 79 miles West of Port-
land on the Oregon Coast. Quality of life and the
environment are highest priorities; summer daytime
population averages 15,000. Under the general
supervision of the City Manager, administers, plans,
organizes, integrates and directs the programs and
maintenance functions of the City’s Public Works
Department including water treatment and distribu-
tion system, roads and streets, wastewater treatment
plant and wastewater collection system, stormwater,
recycling and parks and all facilities. This position
supervises the work of 13 employees and manages
an average annual operations budget of $5 million
and an average capital budget of $500,000.
Desirable qualifications include a Bachelor’s or
Master’s degree in engineering, public administra-
tion or a closely related field and a minimum of three
years progressively responsible senior management
level experience in public works administration,
experience with the administration, management,
and regulations governing public work areas, opera-
tions, and maintenance. Experience with budgeting.
Experience with managing bid processes, project
management and the performance of contractors.
Experience with reviewing construction plans and
specifications. Experience in managing and supervis-
ing the work of Public Works staff.
CITY PLANNER –
Population 1705. Salary range $70,000 – $86,000
plus excellent benefits. Unique coastal eesidential/
resort community located 79 miles West of Portland
on the Oregon Coast. Quality of life and environ-
ment are highest priorities. Administers the City’s
Comprehensive Plan; prepares recommendations for
urban land which implement adopted development
goals and visions for the community. Provides overall
management and administration for planning, imple-
mentation and coordination of long and short-range
community development programs and projects and
the application of and compliance with City and State
land use policies and regulations. Reviews/evaluates
land use development applications, analyzes devel-
opment trends, conducts special studies and makes
recommendations to City management. Oversees
and directs the work of consultants, the City Building
Official, the city short term rental program and other
city programs.
Desirable qualifications include experience as a
City Planner with the same or similar role and level
of responsibility. Experience in the application and
interpretation of City, State, Federal laws, rules and
regulations. Experience in management and admin-
istration, a Bachelor’s degree in urban design, urban
planning, public administration or a closely related
field, two years progressive experience in addressing
growth management or land use, preferably in a local
government environment working with elected policy
makers, commissions and boards.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS (EPREP)
COMMITTEE: TWO (2) vacancies to fill four-year
terms. The EPREP Committee meets regularly for the
purpose of providing evacuation planning and public
education regarding emergency preparedness. The
Emergency Preparedness Committee normally holds
its regular meetings on the last Friday of each month
at 9:00 a.m. and may schedule work sessions as
needed.
To be eligible to serve on a City committee, ap-
plicants must have resided within the city or its urban
growth boundary during the one year immediately
preceding appointment; or at the time of appoint-
