Hiker brought to safety by Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue
Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue came to
the aid of a woman who suffered a broken
leg while hiking on a trail in Ecola State
Park on March 10. Officer Jodi Symonds
was first on scene along with Medix. Chief
Matt Benedict, Lt. Brian Smith and fire-
fighter Jordan Spencer along with Cannon
Beach Police Department and Medix took
the trail to find the woman. It was deter-
mined that a rope team was needed to
bring her to the road.
Seaside Fire and Rescue responded
with four members of their team, including
Chief Joey Daniels. The hiker was found
and transported for medical treatment.
Two people are dead af-
ter a crash Friday afternoon,
March 16, at U.S. Highway
26, 32 miles east of Seaside.
Nineteen-year-old Kend-
ra Cornwell from Gresham,
a passenger in a 2002 black
Chevrolet Trailblazer and
Tom Bonneville, 80, from
Windom, Minnesota, a pas-
senger in a 2017 GMC Aca-
dia, were pronounced dead at
the scene.
According to Oregon
State Police, the Trailblazer
operated by an 18-year-old
Portland woman, Caitlyn
Potter, lost control on east-
bound highway 26, and slid
sideways into the westbound
lane. The Trailblazer first
struck a westbound Toyota
Tacoma without causing inju-
ries before striking the west-
bound GMC in a T-bone fash-
ion. Potter was transported to
OHSU with critical injuries.
The driver of the GMC,
Andrew Bonneville, 71, from
Newberg and three other pas-
sengers in the GMC were
transported to Portland area
hospitals. Two children in the
GMC, ages 8 and 12, were
transported to Emmanuel
Hospital and treated for mi-
nor injuries.
Speed and seatbelt usage
are being considered as pos-
sible contributing factors of
the crash.
The driver of the Toyo-
ta Tacoma was identified as
Daniel Fultz, 35 from Port-
land. His two adult passen-
gers were not injured.
