Open house for Seaside Elks
Cannon Beach Gazette
In celebration of the 150th
birthday of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks, Sea-
side Lodge will host an open
house on Saturday, Feb. 10. All
community members and fami-
lies are invited to visit the lodge,
take a tour, watch the Cub Scout
Pinewood Derby, enjoy a snack,
play a game and meet Elks
members. The lodge and lounge
will open at 11:30 a.m. Snacks
will be offered. Karaoke begins
at 6 p.m. A crab feed will be of-
fered at 6 p.m. for $25. Tickets
must be paid in advance.
The Benevolent and Protec-
tive Order of Elks was the idea of
a theatrical company located in
New York in 1868 and evolved
into a fraternal organization ded-
icated to the service of others.
During the 2017 year, Seaside
members and helpers volun-
teered over 5,000 hours, drove
more than 11,000 miles and do-
nated $9,000 to assist with local
projects. The lodge used Elks
National Foundation grants of
$1,500 to help the county’s local
Head Start Center and $3,000 to
help feed the hungry at Thanks-
giving. The lodge motto is “Elks
Care — Elks Share.”

Coast Community Radio gets grant
Cannon Beach Gazette
Coast Community Radio,
the nonprofit radio station in the
Columbia-Pacific region, has
received a $10,000 grant from
The Templin Foundation of Pa-
cific County. News director Jo-
anne Rideout wrote the grant for
money to replace an important
piece of equipment at the CCR
tower on Megler Mountain in
Chinook, Washington.
Station manager Graham
Nystrom will administer the
funds by purchasing a new
Davicom, a critical device that
closely monitors and commu-
nicates information about the
overall health of multiple func-
tions at the tower’s very large
and expensive 5,000-watt Har-
ris transmitter. It also allows re-
mote control of certain aspects
of the transmitter from the sta-
tion’s studios.
appy February, everybody!!
Even though it’s still winter
here in Cannon Beach, our
library is still a “happening place,”
with lots going on!
But before we begin, we at the
library would like to thank the many
library supporters who responded
to our annual appeal letter! We are
happy to report we received at least
355 pledges — enough to cover 30
percent of our annual operating ex-
penses! Without our many support-
ers, it would be much more difficult
to keep our library such a significant
part of what makes Cannon Beach
a special place to be. Many thanks
from all of us!
On Wednesday, Feb. 14, at
7 p.m., the HRAP Lecture Series
will continue with a presentation by
Leigh Torres, assistant professor at
AT THE LIBRARY
CARLA O’REILLY
Oregon State University. The talk
is entitled “Through the Looking
Glass: New Perspectives on Whale
Ecology to Inform Conservation.”
The HRAP talks are held at the
library.
Cannon Beach Police Chief
Jason Schermerhorn will be on hand
at the library at 10 a.m. Thursday,
February 15. He will be speaking to
us about safety issues— both while
working at the library desk and
while around town or in our homes.
While Cannon Beach is a relatively
safe place in which to live, work,
or to visit, vigilance is always to be
encouraged. Please arrive on time,
so the Chief can get back to work in
a timely manner! Light refreshments
will be provided.
Finally, Cannon Beach Reads,
our library reading and discussion
group, will meet at the library at 7
p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21. This
month the group has been reading
“It Can’t Happen Here,”by Sinclair
Lewis. The book is a cautionary
tale about the fragility of democ-
racy and how an encroachment by
fascism could happen in the United
States. Phyllis Bernt will be the
discussion leader. For additional in-
formation, please contact Joe Bernt
at 503-436-4186.
Come join us for the last few
weeks of winter. We promise you a
cozy fire and a friendly atmosphere.

The 21st annual Great Back-
yard Bird Count takes place
from Feb. 16 through Feb. 19 at

able for loan within the park.
The park also plans four
days of bird-related opportuni-
ties. A “great pink heron scav-
enger hunt” will be ongoing,
using the Netul Trail along the
Lewis and Clark River.
On Saturday, Feb. 17, Mike
Patterson will lead a bird walk
starting at 8:30 a.m., meeting in
the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center
lobby.

Koons, a curator at the Oregon
Zoo, speaks about California
condors at 1 p.m. in the Netul
River Room of the Fort Clatsop
Visitor Center.
On Monday, Feb. 19, Pres-
idents’ Day, the park will offer
a birding walk in Spanish at 10

welcome at most of the park’s
outdoor programs, dogs are not
allowed on birding walks.
Mallards at Fort Clatsop.
The walks are wheelchair
accessible but non-motorized
users might need assistance for
about 200 yards.

p.m. each day. Admission is $5
per adult and free for youth 15
years old and under. Passes to
National Park Service sites are
