‘Writing Outside the Box’
Liz Prato will lead a Writing Workshop “Writing Out-
side the Box” at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Man-
zanita on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 1 to 3
p.m. The workshop will include lecture
and guided writing.
Prato is author of “baby’s on fi re,” a
collection of short stories. Her short sto-
ries and essays have appeared in more
than two dozen literary journals and
magazines. She was guest prose editor

for the Summer 2013 issue of Voice-
Catcher, and edited the fi ction antholo-
gy, “The Night, and the Rain, and the River.”
Awards include the 2010 Minnetonka Review Edi-
tor’s Prize, fi rst place in
the 2005 Berkeley Fic-
tion Review Sudden Fic-
tion contest, four Push-
cart Prize nominations,
and a scholarship to the
2012 Sewanee Writers’
Conference. She began
teaching at the Attic In-
stitute in in 2008, and has
taught creative writing
for several literary or-
ganizations throughout
Oregon.

The North Coast Squid, a
program of the Hoffman Cen-
ter for the Arts and the Manza-
nita Writers Series, showcases
the work of writers and artists
who live on the north Oregon
coast or have a strong connec-
tion to the area. The next is-

Andrea Hollander will
judge poetry. She is author of
four full-length award-win-
ning poetry collections and has
been awarded many fellow-
ships. For 22 years she served
as the writer-in-residence at
Lyon College where she was
awarded the Lamar William-
son Prize for excellence in
teaching. She lives in Port-
land where she teaches work-
shops at the Attic Institute and
Mountain Writers Series.
Diana Abu-Jaber will judge
nonfi ction. She is author of
six award-winning books, her
latest being “Life Without a

North Coast Squid literary

One month to go for writers
and artists to get their writing
and art submissions ready for
the 2018 North Coast Squid
literary magazine.
Submissions for the sixth
North Coast Squid will be ac-
cepted from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.
Submissions are accepted for
fi ction, nonfi ction (includes
memoir) and poetry. There is
a Young Writers category for
ages 18 and under.
All submissions are se-
lected in a blind judging by
authors and or poets outside
the coastal area. Submissions
of art, photos and photos of
sculptures will also be solic-
ited for cover art and inside
art with fi nal art chosen by a
committee.
All work must be sub-
mitted electronically via the
“submit” button on the North
