Donald Eugene Laird
Authors take the stage at the library
Jan. 3, 1958 — June 24 2017
Donald Eugene Laird, 59,
died June 24, 2017, of natural
causes, at his home in War-
renton.
Don was born in Sasebo,
Japan, on Jan. 3, 1958, to
Charles and Mary (Filliger)
Laird, while his father was on
active duty in the U.S. Navy.
Don attended Lewis &
Clark District 5 Grade School,
Astoria High School, and
graduated from Warrenton
High School in 1977. While
in grade school he joined the
school circus, under the di-
rection of Max Bigby, as a
fi re-ater. Don was active in
horsemanship in both 4-H and
the Future Farmers of Amer-
ica. His talent of fi re-eating
earned him a trip to the FFA
National Talent competition
in 1973.
After high school, Don
joined the U.S. Navy Sea-
bees, and spent seven years
in the service before being
honorably discharged. Upon
leaving the Navy, he had var-
ious jobs working with heavy
equipment and driving truck,
and he loved the work. He
was most recently employed
by Trails End Recovery, until
he was forced to stop for med-
ical reasons. His love for an-
imals led him to spend some
time volunteering at the Clat-
sop County Animal Shelter.
Don loved to dance, sing
karaoke and was a talented
photographer. He was mar-
ried to Ruthetta Staulcup Tor-
rez in the summer of 1986.
They had no children, and
later divorced.
Don was the fi fth of six
children, and leaves his sib-
lings to mourn his death:
Mary Briggs (Charles) of
Tigard, Oregon, Richard
Laird (Janne) of Vancouver,
H
Donald Laird
Washington, Liz O’Brien
(Tim) of Portland, Oregon,
Patty Hawk (Steve) of Big
Lake, Alaska, and Mike Laird
(Margi) of Seaside, Oregon.

(Julie) of Seattle, Washington,

Massachusetts, Jeffrey Fuller
of Boulder, Colorado, Greg
Filliger (Sue) of Seaside, Ore-
gon, Jan Morrison of Warren-
ton, Oregon, Kelly Filliger of

liger of Warrenton, Oregon,
Stu Laird (Cindy) of Bend,
Oregon and Julie Laird of
Fresno, California. He is also
survived by numerous nieces,
nephews and friends, and his
little dog, Julie.
A funeral service will be
held at Our Lady of Victory
Catholic Church, 120 Ocean-
way in Seaside, on Saturday,
Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. Following
the service, there will be a re-
ception at the church hall.
In lieu of fl owers, memo-
rial contributions can be made
to the Clatsop County Animal
Shelter.
appy August, locals and visitors!
We have several upcoming
events to look forward to!
First of all, the ongoing reading/
discussion group, Cannon Beach Reads,
will be meeting on Wednesday, Aug.
16, at 7 p.m. at the library. This month
the group has been reading “Reporting
the Oregon Story: How Activists and
Visionaries Transformed a State,” by
Floyd McKay. McKay was a leading
journalist at the Oregon Statesman in
Salem and a news analyst for KGW-
TV in Portland. He was a winner of the
DuPont-Columbia Broadcast award and
holds a Ph.D. in media history from the
University of Washington. He now lives
in Bellingham, Washington. Discussion
leader for August will be Joe Bernt.
New members always encouraged!
We are pleased and excited to
announce that author J.A. Jance will be
returning to Cannon Beach to speak on
Thursday, Aug. 24 from 2-4 p.m. The
event is free to the public and will be
held at the Coaster Theater.
Jance was born Oct. 27, 1944. She

She is a graduate of the University of
Arizona. Nowadays she lives part of the
year in Arizona and part of the year in
Seattle. Her latest book, “Matchup was
published on June 13. Her next book
entitled Proof of Life will come out on
Sept. 5 of this year. Individuals desiring
to see and listen to Ms. Jance should
arrive promptly at the Coaster Theater
to be assured a seat!
Also, it isn’t too late to join our
youth summer reading contest Rocking
in Our READ Shoes. You win prizes
along the way and a chance to win a
grand prize at the end of the summer.
Winners will be announced Aug. 22.
As we move on through the year
until our 90th birthday this autumn, we
have a few things on the calendar for
September. On Sept. 6 we will have our
fi rst membership meeting of the fall at
the library at 10 a.m. Let’s get together
for some updates and to learn more
about estate planning with special guest
speaker Charles Dice. All members
welcome!
Calling all bakers and crafters! We
need handmade craft items and deli-
cious baked goods to have for sale at
the Fall Festival, which will be held on
Sept. 30. So if you enjoy crafts, better
to get started on them now, while there’s
time! Baking, of course, can be done
right before the festival!
Finally, drop by the library any time
to admire our beautiful 2017 quilt. It
was featured at the Farmers Market in
June and July, and we are looking for-
ward to some Tuesdays in August, too.
Tickets sell for $1 each or six tickets for
$5. The winning name will be drawn at
our Holiday Tea on Dec. 2.
Enjoy the rest of our beautiful weath-
er, and do drop into the Cannon Beach
Library to get some summer reading
materials
