Parks Manager Ben Cox of the Oregon Parks and Rec-
reation Department has a few safety tips for visitors to
Oregon’s beaches:

With the help of good Sa-
maritan bystanders, a 29-year-
old Portland surfer survived a
shark attack on Indian Beach in
Ecola State Park on Oct. 10.
Joseph Tanner was surf-
ing when he was attacked by
a shark, according to Oregon
State Police, sustaining bites to
his upper thigh and lower leg.
He fought off the shark by hit-
ting the shark in the face, Can-
non Beach volunteer ireighter
David Norris said. Then by-
standers at the beach applied a
tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
Surfer Jeff Rose told KGW-
TV that Tanner is a trauma
nurse.
“He directed his own irst
aid, what needed to be done,”
Rose said. “He asked us a lot of
questions, what we were see-
ing, if we saw spurting blood.”
Tanner was stabilized on
scene and transported via Life
Flight critical care air transport
to Legacy Emanuel Medical
Center in Portland. Norris, a
MetroWest paramedic, helped
provide support at the scene.
“The bystanders have done
a phenomenal job,” Norris
said.
Tanner is in good condition
and still in the hospital, Legacy

The ocean shore is a wild, natural place. Injuries
from rip currents, logs, and tides are far more com-
mon than injuries from sharks; when you visit, play
it safe. Beach safety tips are on our website at www.
oregonstateparks.org.
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department does
not compile statistics on reported shark attacks,
but they are very rare of the Oregon coast. Beach-
goers should also be careful of rip currents, logs, and
tides.

Oicials say a man was attacked by a shark while suring at Indian Beach in Ecola State
Park near Cannon Beach.
Health spokesperson Megan
Deisler said Monday.
Cannon Beach Police De-
partment, Oregon State Po-
lice, Cannon Beach Fire and
Rescue, Seaside paramedics,
Clatsop County Sheriff’s Of-
ice, Medix ambulance and
Life Flight Network were on
the scene. “We called Portland
because Astoria was tied up,”
said Cannon Beach Fire Chief
Matt Benedict, who awaited
the arrival of Life Flight at
Ecola State Park.
“It looked like it sank its
teeth in,” Benedict said of the
bite. “You have some big arter-
ies in your leg so if you cut one,
you could lose a lot of blood.”
Shark bites are not a com-
mon occurrence in Cannon
Beach, Norris said. The last
one he knows of occurred in
the 1980s.
The International Shark At-
tack File, which tracks shark
attacks around the world, has
documented 26 shark attacks
on the Oregon Coast.
The Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department rec-
ommends that people using
the ocean offshore, especially
surfers, consult fellow surfers
and experts with organizations
such as the Surfrider Founda-
tion.
In past years, surfers at the
Seaside Cove, Oswald West
State Park, Tillamook Head
and Short Sand Beach have
reported shark injuries, accord-
ing to the Shark Research In-
stitute. The last reported shark
incident at Indian Beach oc-
curred in 1988.
In 1979, a surfer reported
being injured by a shark at Hay-
stack Rock in Cannon Beach.
The online Global Shark At-
tack File database shows there
have been 20 attacks off the
Oregon coast during the past
25 years, all involving surfers
who survived. The most recent
happened three years ago, off
Gleneden Beach in Lincoln
County.
Investigators have yet to de-
termine what type of shark bit
Tanner.
“The ocean shore is a wild,
natural place,” said Parks Man-
ager Ben Cox said.
Injuries from rip currents,
For tips on suring, we recommend contacting
the experts with organizations like the Oregon
Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
Be safe, be prepared
According to www.sharkattackdata.com, people
of Oregon’s coast have reported being injured by
sharks three times in the past decade. While the
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department isn’t in-
volved in managing recreation ofshore, it does post
information about wildlife encounters.
As a natural, wild place, people coming to the
Oregon coast can prepare themselves to enjoy the
ocean shore by visiting www.respectthebeach.org.
For people using the ocean ofshore, especially surf-
ers, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department
recommends consulting fellow surfers.
