Academy asks district for approved charter
Academy aims for
approval without
conditions
the charter approval, Cannon Beach
Academy stated in an Aug. 19 mes-
sage.
“If you have an approved charter,
versus an approved with conditions
charter, you have an exponentially
better chance of getting grants and
awards,” the academy’s interim ex-
ecutive director Ryan Hull said at the
August district board meeting. “What
that doesn’t do is remove things that
you want us to be held accountable
for.”

In order to qualify for grants and
gain more inancial security, Cannon
Beach Academy needs the Seaside
School District’s approval of its char-
ter application without conditions,
school leaders said.
The conditions can be addressed

Seaside School District boardmember
in spring. Seaside School District
expects to resolve the charter appli-
cation before the grant application
period, Superintendent Sheila Roley
said.
“I think we as a board see the ur-
gency of getting those things done,”
district board member Steve Phillips
said. “It sounds like we are on the
same page and moving forward.”
The academy met with Roley prior
to the board meeting.
“We’ve been in good communica-
tion and trying to move to the best out-
come for all of our kids,” Roley said.
The district approved the academy
in October under conditions, such as
that the school would serve at least 44
kindergarten and irst-grade students
in its irst year. In March, the district
withdrew conditional approval, stating
that the academy fell short on funding,
enrollment and a state-approved En-
glish Language Learning program.

Former planning commissioner now a council candidate
Ogilvie serves
on afordable
housing task
force
By Lyra Fontaine
Cannon Beach Gazette
Brandon Ogilvie, a for-
mer Cannon Beach Planning
Commission chairman and a
member of the city’s afford-
able housing task force, will
run for City Council in No-
vember.
Ogilvie is a
self-employed
carpentry con-
tractor, a career
that has helped
him grasp land
use.
Brandon
“My job as
Ogilvie
a builder helps
me understand
certain land use issues,” he said.
While serving on the Plan-
ning Commission, Ogilvie said
he enjoyed “the process of civic
participation.”
Ogilvie said it is important
for residents to speak out on is-
sues that affect them.
“I’m a champion of civic
participation on both sides, not
just the people that are in city
government but actual citizens
that live here,” he said. “Even
if it’s just a letter, it gets put into
the record.”
Affordable housing is one
issue that interests him, though
he said there are “no simple an-
swers.”
Before Ogilvie became a
carpenter and builder, he was
a bartender at local restaurants
like Bill’s Tavern for more than
a decade.
“It was a good way to meet
people,” he said.
Drawn to the beach from the
Seattle area, Ogilvie has lived
in Cannon Beach for 24 years.
He has raised his daughter in
town.
“I think I have appreciation
for parents and their needs,”
he said. “We no longer have a
school here, which is a shame.”
There will be two open seats
on the council. Ogilvie and two
other residents, Herb Florer and
Nancy McCarthy, have iled to
run. The iling deadline for can-
didates is Aug. 30.
High lead levels isolated at schools, school district taking action
By Lyra Fontaine
Cannon Beach Gazette
High lead levels were found
at a sink faucet at Seaside High
School and a hose at Gearhart
Elementary School after test-
ing in June.
The two problem spots
were among 39 locations test-
ed for lead.
The sink faucet was at the
Seaside High School conces-
sions stand and has since been
replaced, district maintenance
supervisor Glendon Ely said.
The water is undergoing re-
testing and results are expect-
ed in several months.
The faucet was not used
for drinking but was tested be-
cause of potential food prepa-
ration or dishwashing use.
Above-limit lead levels
were also found in a hose in
the Gearhart Elementary boil-
er room. No action was needed
because it was a control sam-
ple, Ely said. The water is used
to clean the boiler room.
