ighters move on from Can-
non Beach Rural Fire Protec-

stepping up to volunteer.
Cannon Beach Fire Chief
Matt Benedict said after the
Aug. 8 board meeting that it
is normal for departments to
lose some volunteers as time
passes and gain new volun-
teers.
Tom Misner and Peggy
Roberti recently retired after
about 68 years of combined
service to the Cannon Beach
ire district.
“Tom and Peggy will be
missed,” Benedict said. “I am
hoping they will join the Fire
Corps.”

As recommended by the
Special Districts Association
of Oregon, Cannon Beach ire
board members will soon use
iPads to keep all ire district
iles and communications in
one place and not on person-
al devices. The change would
eliminated some paper waste.

Cade and Landry, visiting from Montana, had the chance
to check out Cannon Beach Fire’s new ladder truck at Na-
tional Night Out.
Getting to know you was
the theme of the third annual
National Night Out, Tuesday,
Aug. 2. About 100 people gath-
ered to talk with oficers, meet
neighbors, see the new ire truck
and learn more about safety ini-
tiatives at the Chamber of Com-
merce Community Hall.
“That’s one of the reasons
we do this event each year, to
get to know all of you on a dif-
ferent level,” Cannon Beach
Police Chief Jason Schermer-
horn said to the crowd at the
Chamber of Commerce Com-
munity Hall. “It’s not as easy

ner with the Lower Columbia
Diversity Project.
“We send chiefs or differ-
ent oficers to their meetings
to build communication so we
know what’s going on in their
communities and they know
what’s going on in our commu-
nity,” Schermerhorn said. The
department is also working on
strengthening the relationship
between police and Cannon
Beach’s Hispanic community.
A brochure on what residents
can expect from a trafic stop
was available at the event in
English and Spanish.
“We’re good at dealing
with different events but it’s
important to continue to ad-
dress that with the oficers,”
Schermerhorn said.

Food, rafle prizes and
more were donated by local or-
ganizations, including Seaside
Rotary. The event also had a
Home Depot woodworking
station for kids, a Community
Emergency Response Team
booth for residents to sign up
and free helmets.
There were about 40 people
at the 2014 event and 60 peo-
ple last year.
“Each year gets better and
better,” Schermerhorn said.
Schermerhorn
thanked
event attendees, including ad-
ministrative specialist Valerie
Mannix and oficers Chris
Wilbur, James Jordan, Joseph
Bowman and Jodi Symonds.
“It’s to meet new people we
haven’t met yet and we partner
with Home Depot and the ire
department so kids can see us
on another level,” Schermer-
horn said. “We’re just as hu-
man as they are.”
