Benedict said trainings
have had high volunteer par-
ticipation and teamwork.
“Working together as a
team is what I really like to
see,” he said.

“The board and I are look-
ing out for citizens,” he said.
“If something happens, it only
takes one individual to not do
the right thing and ruin it for
everyone else and the district.”
Benedict said making the
change was one step toward
“cleaning up” and aligning
policy with the state.
“This area is one of the last
agencies I think in the state
that go directly to the scene
instead of the ire station,”
Benedict said. “We just need
to start moving forward.”
Board member Bob Cerel-
li said ireighters asked him
about the new policy.
“Part of the beauty of our
system is quick response, and
some of that quick response
is personal vehicles,” Cerelli
said.
Special Districts Associa-
tion of Oregon recommended
to disallow personal vehicle
use years ago, Benedict said.
The policy would not signii-
cantly affect ire call response
times.
Personal vehicles, espe-
cially with lights, could con-
fuse tourists, he added.

CANNON BEACH FIRE AND RESCUE
A Coast Guard helicopter hovers at Cannon Beach during a rescue July 14.
The ire district had its irst
water rescue team drill of the
year in July, with ireighters
taking turns rescuing a dum-
my from the ocean.
At the Arch Cape ire sta-
tion, ireighters completed
Life Flight training to learn to
safely land a helicopter.
Before retiring, former
Captain Mark Morgan in-
structed rope rescue training.
Rescue efforts paid off
July 14 as ireighters, life-
guards, police and the Coast
Guard teamed to rescue an
individual stranded on a rock
at high tide.
In June, the station re-
sponded to 26 EMS calls,
nine ire calls and one rescue
call for a broken ankle at In-
dian Beach. Fireighters also
assisted with a Hamlet struc-
tural ire.
Oicers elected
Board oficers were elect-
ed at the July 11 meeting, the
irst of the iscal year. All of-
icers were re-elected: presi-
dent Sharon Clyde, vice-pres-
ident and secretary Garry
Smith, and treasurer Linda
Beck-Sweeney. In April, the
oficers’ positions were sub-
jected to a recall vote follow-
ing the dismissal of former
Fire Chief Mike Balzer. The
recall failed.
The ire station’s 25-year-
old roof may need complete
replacement soon. Moisture
has been coming from the
ceiling and walls, Benedict
said, and the station will look
into hiring a roofer and con-
tractor.

Torture not funny
To the people of Cannon
Beach: Recently I visited your
city. Although there is, in gen-
eral, a welcoming atmosphere I
had an unfortunate experience
in the parking lot of one of the
city’s restaurants. I am hope-
ful you will see it as a serious
matter you need to confront if
it continues in your midst.
There was a car in the
parking lot with two signs on
it. One, on the bumper, only
presents a problem of civility.
It said “Up yours Hillary Clin-
ton.” The other was different:
it said “I love waterboarding.”
That required a response, so I
wrote a brief note, but he was
gone before I could give it to
him, or leave it on his car.
This is the note, and I hope
it will produce some thoughtful
consideration in the Cannon
Beach community. The note
read as follows:
I stand in awe, and I am
humbled. I did not know any-
one could display such mali-
cious ignorance. Your lack of
civility undermines what so
many have sacriiced in our
courts, and on battleields to
secure for all of us. When wa-
terboarding becomes “due pro-
cess of law,” we sink to the lev-
el of the very totalitarians we
have faced so often. You might
read the Bill of Rights as a
place to begin your education.
