Take a guided hike up
Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain
Experience the connection
between land and sea during
the upcoming World Oceans
Day Hike to the summit of
Neah-Kah-Nie
Mountain
in Oswald West State Park
Wednesday, June 8, at 10 a.m.
This free guided hike is part
of the Explore Nature series
of hikes, walks, paddles and
outdoor adventures. Hosted
by a consortium of volunteer
community and non-proit
organizations, these meaning-
ful nature-based experiences
highlight the unique beauty
of Tillamook County and the
work being done to preserve
and conserve the area’s natu-
ral resources and natural re-
source-based economy.

and watershed, Oswald West
State Park and the Cape Fal-
con Marine Reserve. An area
where ocean and land conser-
vation meet, this 5-mile hike
will highlight the interconnec-
tion of the marine and terres-
trial environment along the
north coast and the work being
done to protect these areas.
The event is free and
open to the public. There
are no bathrooms or drink-
ing water facilities on this
hike. Bring water and snacks/
lunch. Weather on the Oregon
Coast is unpredictable and
trails can be slick and muddy.
Be prepared and bring appro-
priate gear and clothing.
Expect to spend three to
four hours on the trail. The
trail is steep at times and
was damaged some by win-
ter storms. Be prepared to
scamper over or under sizable
fallen trees and larger rocks
blocking the trail.
Meet at Neah-Kah-Nie
Mountain South Trailhead
parking area located on the
east side of Highway 101, just
south of milepost 40 and, two
miles south of Short Sands
Beach in Oswald West State
Park. Parking is limited; car-
pool when possible. Register
at online at Cape Falcon Ma-
rine Reserve Facebook page.
Haystack program
seeks volunteers
Cannon Beach is seeking
qualiied applicants for rocky
shore interpreters and lead
rocky shore interpreters for
the Haystack Rock Aware-
ness Program. These sea-
sonal part-time positions run
February through October
under the supervision of the
program’s coordinator.
The awareness program
is a stewardship and environ-
mental educational program
whose mission is to protect,
through education, the inter-
tidal and seabird ecology of
the Marine Garden and Ore-
gon Islands National Wildlife
Refuge at Haystack Rock.
Interpreters educate the
public about intertidal and
seabird ecology, support
school ield trip programs,
promote stewardship, redi-
rect visitors engaging in pro-
hibited activities, set-up and
break down the program’s
mobile education unit,
collect accurate data, and
maintain equipment off the
beach. Since beach program
schedules vary daily around
low tide, applicants must be
willing to work early morn-
ings, mid-days, evenings and
weekends. Work schedules
are coordinated one month in
advance.
Interviews will begin in
May and continue until all
positions are illed.
To apply, send a complet-
ed city application available

Volunteer stands up for whales, dolphins

volunteers in protecting Hay-
stack Rock, a national wildlife
refuge and marine garden.
“I can see the effect that
we’re having and that’s what
is really important to me, to be
able to directly protect these
ecosystems,” she said.
Holtman has found it use-
ful to have an interpreter north
of the rock inform people
about wildlife in the marine
garden — like sea anemones
— and let them know that the
best wildlife views might be
on the other side of the rock.
“To have one interpreter
telling people that can pre-
vent hundreds of people from
trampling the marine garden,”
she said. “It just makes a bet-
ter experience for everyone.”
The marine garden is al-
ways changing, Holtman said.
In a negative tide, visitors can
walk farther out to the needles
and see different views. Black
oystercatchers will soon es-
tablish their nests on one side
of the rock.
Dolphins and whales
Holtman’s passion for
dolphins and whales led her
to do ield work in both the
north Atlantic Ocean and the

Paciic Northwest, as well as
support dolphin and whale
conservation efforts through-
out the world, such as in
Antarctica and Japan. Some
whales are “apex predators
that have a signiicant impact
on all the other species in the
ecosystem,” she said.
For months, Holtman
worked in the Faroe Islands
to address the mass slaughter
of pilot whales and dolphins
during hunts, which she said
is an outdated tradition that
needs to end.
“Whole pods are killed,
from the matriarch to the un-
born fetuses,” she said. “It’s
very brutal.”
Videos of Faroe Islands’
“grinds,” as the whale kill-
ings are called, show water
turning red from blood. Al-
though some still view the
killings as tradition, many
kill the whales for sport.
“There are awesome
things about their culture that
they can hold onto,” Holt-
man said. “But I think at this
point, it’s better something
like that is left in the history
books.”
Holtman helped save
whales and dolphins with
other Sea Shepherd Conser-
vation Society volunteers. In
2014, the organization saved
1,500 pilot whales.
When she isn’t standing
up for marine mammals and
coordinating Haystack Rock
volunteers, Holtman enjoys
exploring the Paciic North-
west through doing research
and hiking.
The Tillamook County
native also enjoys cars: she
studied automotive technol-
ogy at Umpqua Community
College.
“I’m really passionate
about working on vehi-
cles, ixing things and being
self-sustaining,” she said.
Moving forward, Holtman
said she hopes to study engi-
neering and further her ma-
rine conservation work. She
looks forward to volunteer-
ing for the black oystercatch-
er and seabird monitoring at
Cape Falcon Marine Reserve,
and supports organizations
like the Audubon Society and
Sea Turtles Forever.
“My goal is to build a life
that you don’t need a vaca-
tion from,” she said, “so I
feel really happy with the
work that I’m doing.”
