Bruce Bobek announces run for House Police to step up
Noted physician
seeks seat in
Legislature
By R.J. Marx
Cannon Beach Gazette
Dr. Bruce Bobek, an Asto-
ria physician and president of
Columbia Memorial Medical
Staff, will seek the Republi-
can nomination for Oregon
House District 32. The district
includes Clatsop County and
parts of Tillamook and Wash-
ington counties. The term
of office, held by incumbent
Deborah Boone, is two years.
Bobek has lived in Clatsop
County for 26 years and pre-
viously served as a commis-
sioner for the City of Warren-
ton. During his time in office,
Bobek helped fund and build
the Warrenton Library, estab-
lish the Warrenton Wetlands
Plan, and develop the Warren-
ton Business Association.
“I always had an interest
in politics,” Bobek, 65, said
Wednesday.
Bobek moved with his
family to Astoria in 1990.
When his youngest daughter
said the city’s hills were “too
high and scary,” the family, in-
cluding Beverly and five chil-
dren, moved to Warrenton.
“I was a city commissioner
in the ’90s and then my prac-
tice got so busy that between
my kids and my practice, I
didn’t have time for politics,”
Bobek said. “I helped start the
Warrenton scholarship pro-
gram in 1996. I was president
of that for several years and
now I’m on the board.”With
his children grown and career
solidly established, in January
Bobek decided to make a bid
for the Legislature.
He described his political
philosophy as “fiscally con-
servative, but
pretty open.”
He said
regulations
are “onerous
for business-
es in general,
and for small

throughout.”
From a
policy perspective, he said
he was focused on improv-
ing health care and education
throughout the state. Bobek
said he recognizes a need for
emergency preparedness, but
“would try to stay within bud-
get.”
“I’m all for first respond-
ers, whatever we can do to
help them, make it easier,” he
said. “But I would be a big fan
of making sure we have the
money to do all these things. I
would be fiscally responsible.”
He said Salem was in
need of change. “I appreciate
DUII enforcement
on St. Patrick’s Day
‘As far as
medical care is
concerned, the
government
has got it
backward. They
need to have
an umbrella so
no one goes
bankrupt.’
The Cannon Beach Po-
lice Department will join
other Clatsop County law
enforcement agencies in
adding more officer patrols
on roadways on March 17 to
detect people driving under
the influence of intoxicants.
The additional focus on
keeping streets safe from
impaired drivers is part of
the Driving While Under
the Influence of Intoxicants
High Visibility Enforce-
ment grant from Oregon
Impact.

the work and time Debbie
Boone has put in. I’m not a
negative person. I’m not go-
ing to say her performance is
bad, but I think people would
vote for an overall change of
policy.”
Bobek is unchallenged
within his party. Primary day
is May 17.
Jazz guitar performance with John Stowell at the History Center
The Cannon Beach History
Center & Museum presents jazz
guitarist John Stowell for the
encore performance of the year.
Stowell began his career in
the early 1970s with guitarist
Linc Chamberland and pianist
John Mehegan. He is an inter-
nationally renowned perform-
er who has been welcomed to
Australia, all over Europe, and
now to Cannon Beach. The con-
cert takes place Friday, March
25 at 7 p.m.,
Stowell continues to tour,
record and teach interna-
tionally. He has been an art-
ist-in-residence at schools in
Germany, Indonesia, Argen-
tina, the United States and
Canada. Stowell was the first
American jazz performer to
appear in Russia after the fall
of the Iron Curtain.
Seating for this concert is
limited. Tickets are available
through cbhistory.org, by phone,
or in person; $12 admission for
adults and $2 for children, com-
plimentary refreshments will be
due to impaired driving.
The Cannon Beach Po-
lice Department ask that
people remember that
“buzzed driving is drunk
driving” and that having a
designated driver, calling a
taxi or walking are options.
Impairment can come from
not only alcohol, but also
marijuana, illegal drugs or
prescription medications.
Cannon Beach police
ask that people take action
if they see someone who
may be driving impaired
by calling the South Coun-

the case of an emergency.
