    Spring ARTS
Unveiling
FESTIVAL
15TH ANNUAL
It’s time once again to celebrate one of the North Oregon Coast’s most popular
events. From May 1-3, it’s ALL about ART! Organized by the 10 galleries that make
up the Cannon Beach Gallery Group, this event just keeps getting better and better.
T
Take a look at the complete schedule of events
we’ve included and get ready to meet and talk with the
dozens of artists who have come to town. Watch as
they unveil their newest work, listen to some great
music and discover a new wine or two. You might also
just find a new sculpture, watercolor, oil painting,
blown glass vase or table you just have to take home.
And when you’re ready to take a break, plan to be
treated to more art…the edible kind…served up by
nearly every Cannon Beach chef, barista and candy
maker. As part of the 4th Annual “Art from the Chef’s
Table” they’ve all added special menu items just for
the weekend, based upon works of art they’ve selected
from the galleries.
At White Bird Gallery they will unveil paintings by
well-known Oregon artist Deborah DeWit, animated
human and anamorphic, bird-like sculptures by Robin
and John Gumaelius, and paintings and jewelry of
Faryn Davis, who incorporates tiny painted scenes and
found ephemera from nature into her work. Saturday
evening’s reception will feature live music by British
singer-songwriter Anne-Marie Sanderson.
Take a quick side trip through the block to Spruce
Street, where you’ll find Northwest By Northwest
Gallery. If you’ve stopped to enjoy the wonderful ani-
mal sculptures around the Pioneer Courthouse in Port-
land, or rubbed the nose of “Rachel the Pig” at Pike
Place Market in Seattle, you’ll want to stop by at 5 p.m.
Friday to meet artist Georgia Gerber and learn more
about how she works. That same evening, other artists
on hand will be Ivan McLean, Eric Jacobsen, Hazel
Schlesinger, Kirk Lybecker and Don Stastny. The recep-
tion will feature music by Paul Dueber and Bobcat
Bob. On Saturday, Master photographer Christopher
Burkett will be on hand to unveil his newest work. It’s
been said that he has done for color what Adams and
Weston did for black and white. The gallery is also pre-
senting Oregon oil painter Jeff White whose work rep-
resents the balance found in the harmonies between
the environment and man, the voyager, passing
through time. Saturday’s reception will feature Bobcat
Bob on Jazz Guitar with wines from Sinnean Winery.
And just next door is Primary Elements Gallery, cel-
ebrating their new location. As usual, they will fill the
weekend with ongoing demonstrations by sculptors
Heather Soderberg, Steve Gevurtz, Jack Gibson, Rip
and Chad Casell and Josh Henrie. Friday evening’s re-
ception will feature music by Two Crows Joy. Saturday,
stop by to hear L.G. Burger’s smooth jazz and classical
music and enjoy light refreshments catered by Sea-
sons Café.
At “The Landing,” Bronze Coast Gallery will host a
cocktail reception Saturday evening for Linda Prokop,
sculptor and painter, as she unveils her new work. On
Saturday afternoon Hans Schiebold will unveil new
paintings, followed by a reception that evening.
Across the courtyard, Modern Villa Gallery will be
presenting a new series of paintings by Sarah Good-
nough, with a Saturday night reception.
Around the corner, toward the beach on 2nd Street
is the upstairs Archimedes Gallery. They are featuring
three artists: Josh Keyes who paints animals in a style
reminiscent of anatomical diagrams, David Rice who
focuses on the themes of nature and its personifying
characteristics, and Kelly Vivanco who enjoys setting
whimsy to work upon natural enigmas and pulls her in-
spiration from the natural and imagined world, vintage
photographs, literature, and the idiosyncrasies of
dreams. Saturday’s reception will feature handcrafted
cocktails by Cannon Beach Distillery and MicroBrews
from Bill’s Tavern Brewhouse
In Sandpiper Square you’ll find the Jeffrey Hull
Gallery just up the stairs. Rarely found far from the
ocean’s edge, he has been painting in Cannon Beach
for more than 40 years, capturing what we all love
about our favorite coast. He’ll be unveiling new origi-
nals on Friday during his reception and will present his
newest print on Saturday. He’s also hosting a Saturday
evening reception.
Head on up the street to DragonFire Gallery where
on Friday afternoon you’ll see new garden art by
Andrew Holmberg, Kongyega Studio, Kimberli Matin,
and Michael Thiesen…featuring everything from blown
glass, to steel, recycled metal and wood. On Saturday
morning new work will be unveiled by Chuck Gumpert,
Ann Cavanaugh and Elena Markova, followed by
demonstrations by all three artists. Saturday night’s
reception will feature music from Luminos, and cater-
ing by Jonathan Hoffman. They will also serve a lite
brunch on Sunday with music by Bucky Pottschmidt.
And be sure you take in “Midtown”…just a short
walk to the south of downtown Cannon Beach.
Icefire Glassworks is where you’ll be entranced by
glass blowers Jim Kingwell, Suzanne Kindland and
Mark Gordon and fused glass artist Raphael. And be
sure to check out their breakfast reception on Satur-
day morning.
Finally, venture across the street to the Cannon
Beach Gallery, where they’ll be hosting “Shirley Gittel-
sohn, A Retrospective,“ honoring the work of this
long-standing member of the Oregon Arts Community
during the month of her 90th birthday. She will present
an Artist’s Talk at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, and be
present for the reception on Saturday evening.
Spring Unveiling offers a packed-full weekend. Before you leave we know you’ll see why Cannon Beach is “One of the 100 Best Small
Art Towns in America.” And why National Geographic just happened to name it “One of the World’s 100 Most Beautiful Places.”
