February 27, 2015 | Cannon Beach Gazette | cannonbeachgazette.com • 9A Kidz Camp teaches acting, singing and dancing Theatre has three camp scholarships Spring is coming, and the stage is calling. The Coaster Theatre Kidz Camp, where children aged 8 to 18 spend their spring break playing theater games and mounting a personalized play, is open for registration. From 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. March 23 through 27 DW WKH &RDVWHU WKH ÀHGJOLQJ thespians will learn the ba- sics of acting, singing and dancing. Their teamwork and imaginative enterprise will culminate in a Friday after- noon performance of “Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Facto- ry.” But be warned: The kids may very well kick Roald Dahl’s original story to the curb and devise their own story featuring the same cast of characters: Charlie Buck- et, Veruca Salt, Augustus Gloop, etc. Scholarships Though the kids may register through March 23, Lathrop strongly recom- mends preregistration. The cost per camper is $115. “If you break that down, that’s pretty inexpen- sive childcare,” Lathrop said. Thanks to funding from the Clatsop County Cultural Coalition, the Coaster is of- fering scholarships to three campers, who will attend the class for free. Lathrop is asking the children who are interested to write a short paragraph (preferably in the child’s own handwriting) on why he or she wants to attend the Kidz Camp and submit it to the Coaster. Scholarship paragraphs are due by March 6 and should be turned in before the parent formally registers the child for the camp. A couple of Coaster The- atre board members or staff members will read through the paragraphs and col- lectively decide who will receive the scholarships. $ZDUGV PD\ EH EDVHG RQ ¿- nancial need, passion for the- ater or other criteria, Lathrop said. For more information, call 503-436-1242 or visit coastertheatre.com. Regis- tration forms are available on the website. Participants in the Coaster Theater’s Kidzcamp in 2013 performed “Stone Soup” at the end of the spring break week.
