A4rtaaUg Mm (trca ana CHRISTMAS Christmas is the only one of our holidays the observance of Which ia based upon good will and thoughtfulness for othei people. Other holidays are in recognition of a great national event or in memory of those who have done or suffered great things for their country. Thanks giving expresses gratitude for our blesaing and New Year's day, if we observe it with thoughtfulness, is an occasion for a little self-examination and a resolve to do better. But Christmas is rightly a day of peace and good will toward other people. The festival this year will be an especially joyous one for America. The shadow of the war has been lifted and we look forward to an era of peace and prosperity. In memory of the great goodness brought to the world on that day in Beth lehem, let us show our good will to others. WERE ON THE JOB General Pershing's recent war report gives us a history of the work which the American army has done in France. It is a con cise document without trace of exaggeration but reading between the lines we see the high courage of our American boys clearly revealed. The work which the Americans have done in the war is far greater than military ex perts foresaw as possible in so short a time but with the effi ciency of the American, which comes from his innate adaptabil ity and use of reasoning powers, they took hold of the war as they would of any other work. In spired by glowing patriotism, they brought to war the Ameri can idea that "the job had to be done and it was up to them to get busy." The page of history for 1918 will show how they carried out their idea. Good to buy, good to hold, good to give for Christmas War Saving Stamps. R.NAYL0R W.V.PRYOR DID A GOOD WORK A word of appreciation is due our exemption boards. They have done patriotic duty of the greatest importance without much praise or publicity. Their service has been u Hiffl cult one, calling for quick discrimination and excellent judgment. Man) of the men have carried out the work at a sacrifice of thel 'kown private interests. With alMheir work there has been very little criticism. The nation owes a debt of gratitude to these real and unostentatious patriots. The sugar bowl is with us again. Will knitting again be one of the lost arts? At the neace table Germany's part is to come through. Carry the real Christmas spirit with you while shopping today Did you renew your member ship in the Red Cross? Do it to day. When the collector calls with Britain's forty-billion dollar bill, he will probably find Germany "not in." The fighting of the Americans showed no lack of pepper and they may now be called seasoned troops. Dutch Cleanser is said to bp wonderful for black stains. Dur ing his sojourn in Holland .Mr. Hohenzollern should try it on hip conscience. If the proposed international police fleet has the characteristics of a city police force, is it not likely to be pretty constantly stranded on a bar? If you can't see the good there is around you, ask Santa to give you a pair of rose colored spec tacles and wear them constantly, for a chronic croaker is worse than a pestilence.
