Couture, who is making a specialty end a success of rais ing fine pure bred Poland China hogs on his Ferry Canyon ranch, recently sold two young boars for biur prices. P. 11. Stcuhen- son got one and Fred Weise the other. Mr. Couture has eighty sows on his ranch now and while at the Btpck show in Portland he bought another high class pure bred sow. The commission com pany to whom Mr. Couture Bold his hogs exhibited some of them at the show and won three blue ribbons with them. Mr. Couture says he will exhibit the hogs him self next year. WM. FARMERS CAN GET GOOD ACCOUNT BOOK The Condon "National Bank has on hand a number of Farmer's Record and Account books. These are being given to the farmers who want a system of keeping tab on their business. Several farmers have already gotten them. The book is com plete, containing pages for cash, bank, 'expense and equipment accounts, breeding record, record of all kinds of stock and all kinds of crops, record of household ex penses, etc . as well as tables of weight and mtauures. Miss Helen Coleman returned Thursday from Baker. She spent the summer with her mother there. Geo. Perry, Sr. and Nat Kcott went to Heppner Wednesday on business. M. and Mrs. J. E. Moore went to Portland Saturday, the latter to undergo an operation for ap pendicitis. The post office was moved to the Davis property on Main street the first of the week. Robt. Ochse and Leonard Ashpaugh were in from LostVal ley Tuesday. Sturgill, school Superin tendent, reports that all school clerks except one have Bent in their census reports for the year and these show that there are 1119 children in Gilliam county schools. The districts that show an increase over last year are Arlington, Blalock. Rock Creek, CONDENSED NEWS OF THE COUNTRY SCHOOLS The Quinn district near May ville has voted a special tax for the purpose of repairing the school building and improving the grounds. The Potter district near Mik kalo which during summer com pleted a modern one room rural school building will also improve the grounds in the near future. The Pattee district in Ferry Canyon will erect a modern school building during the winter or early spring. The next regular eighth grade examination will be held on Jan uary 15th and 16th and all teach ers who have pupils prepared to take the examination are request ed to notify the Superintendent at once. , WEEK'S DOINGS AT CONDON'S PUBLIC SCHOOL All the grades ti the Public School are planning entertain ments for the 24th. The par ents are urged to attend. The Christmas vacation will commence the morning cr the 25th and last until the first Mon day after New Year's. Emmet Hoskin, the champion speller, is spelling 100 words each day and is surely going to win the prize. Miss McQueen, the fourth grade teacher, is teaching the third grade while Miss Keizur is TEAM RUNS AWAY; THROWS DRIVER OUT The laundry team caused a little excitement by runningaway Tuesdty noon. Mr. Shatswell, who was driving, was thrown out and sustained a sprained shoulder and a severely bruised head. NEW RULING IN PARCEL POST SYSTEM; CAN SEND 50 POUNDS IN FIRST ZONE Parcels cp to 50 pounds may be sent by mail after January 1st to all rjostoffices within the 150 mile radius. The rate with in that distance is Unchanged, being five comts for the first pound and one cent for each ad ditional Dound. which comes to 54 centw for a 50 pound parcel. In all other-zones the size of parcels has been increased front 11 to 20 pounds, and the rates reduced. 'Rose Smith, who has been teaching at Trailfork has closed her school for the winter. The school at ' Lost Valley, which was taught by Margeret Kaesemeyer, has been closed for the winter. Esther Norrnansen is teaching in the Hurt district cn Rock. Creek. Mrs. Everett, a teacher with years of experience, has accept ed a position in the Condon school and will take up her duties after the New Year. Buckhorn district has a con Crete cistern with a pump where by water is supplied in the room. The grounds there will be fenced and improved and recreation apparatus installed for the chi'd- taking the teacher's examina tion. Miss Keizur's room still has the highest standard. '. Lea Glover and Orvin Tierney are the champion readers. The pupils of tthe higher grades who keep their work and con duct perfect all day are allowed to go at 3:45. The only new pupil this week is Frank Wilkins in the third grade. "Skinny" Austin. DANCE NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT" IN RINK HALL A dance will be given next Friday night, December 26th, by the high school basketball team in the skating rink. It will be a program dance, the floor will be in good shape and a pleasant time is anticipated. CONDON ELKS HOLD FIRST SMOKER IN KEW CLU3 ROOMS; WILL GIVE SHOW The Elks new club rooms in the Condon National Bank build ing were formally opened Wed nesday night with a smoker, Almost all of the Condon Elks were present and a nice crab supper was served. A business meeting was held and it was de cided that the Elks should give a minstrel show sometime next month. A committee was ap pointed to have charge of this. The club rooms have been deco rated and nicely furnished. A Christmas entertainment will be given in the Baptist church next Wednesday night, Christmas eve. There will be a tree for the younger people. All are welcom?. . ' - " BOURNE, OREGON'S GREATEST SENATOR Geo. McKay, while in the east attended a National Good Roads banquet ' in Detroit and there sat next to Senator Pennypacker, head of the good roads move ment in the United States. Senator Pennypacker told Mr. McKay that the people of Ore gon made a great mistake when they defeated Senator Bourne and also said that Bourne did more for hi3 state than any other two senators that ever repre sented Oregon. Butler of The Dalles arrived in Condon Sunday evening to vitit at the Fitzm,aurice home. Co. has notified the State Corporation Commissioner that it is its pur pose to extend its .branch line from Condon to Fossil in the near future. ARLINGTON TO HAVE MODERN SCHOOL HOUSE The people of Arlington have voted a special tax and are pre paring to erect a modern school building which, when completed, will be a credit to that progres sive little town. MIKKALO FARMER HAS BIG ACREAGE J.S.Smith of Mikkalo was here Monday getting some dental work done by Dr. Penepacker. They are old acquaintances and here on a vacation. Mr. Cluck is a car penter and they may stay here if Geo. H. Ellis Jr. of Bickleton was in Arlington the first of the week on some business matters and while here sold some of his wheat, receiving eighty four cents. - " " Miss Alice Reader daughter cf one of the merchants at Roose velt returned home to spend the holidays with her parents. She has been teaching music in Port land. Miss Laura Smith stopped off at Arlington on her way home from Athena to visit a short time with her sister. Miss Mary Smith, who is working at the Independent office. N. P. Wallace, a former resi dent of this place, who now re sides near Gresham, was here last week on business matters. J. E. Stephens of Rock Creek was in town last week. Dayton Lamoreaux who has been here for the last few months returned to Portland last week to spend Christmas with his parents. R.
