It is a calamitous and incontro vertible fact that when any per son or set of persons take the in itiative in a move which tends toward the rood of this city and pf the general public, should that move le it ever so meritorious. happen to conflict with the in terests of any person or set of persons, an immediate howl of "factionalism" ascends. This perverted idea has done more harm to the city of Condon than all other things, still there are few people here who cling to their ancient opinions On last Saturday we overheard, quite by accident we presume, two per sons talking in regard to the art icle on the distillate question which appeared in our last issue. One contended that this question was "no business of the Globe's anyway." The other, while conceding that it might possibly be some of our business, said that it was nothing but fact ionalism. In the first it is our privilege as a taxpayer to give our opinion in regard to this question and it is also the privil ege and duty of any newspaper which has the welfare of the taxpayers at heart to expose any and all things that the taxpay ers have a right to know for it is these taxpayers that make it possible for a newspaper to. exist Furthermore the setting forth of our opinion in regard to the dis tillate question is not factional ism. l tie tact mat the city is now and has in the past been paying an exorbitant price for distillate and thus getting deeper in th mire each year on account of the entirely unnecessary ex pense would be exposed just as quickly were our closest friend the largest stockholder in the company which has been sell ing distillate to the city. The Condon Electric Co. wants to lease its plant to the city of Condon for 6 per cent, on a val uation of $22,500. From all the figures we can obtain on short notice, we cannot understand how the value of the plant can amounc to tnat.ngure. uur es timate on the cost of the plant are as follows: 50 horse-power engine.. $2500.00 25 horse-power engine... 1500.00 Installation of same 500.00 Building for same.. 500.00 Shafting and belting 1000.00 Dynamo. 2000.00 100 poles and erection 500.00 Wire and instalation ... 1500.00 Distillate tank and lot 750.00 10750.00 These figures are all very lib eral estimates with the possible exception of the distillate tank which might possibly have cost a few dollars more than we have figured. This leaves a balance of $11,750 for which we can show nothing and the above es timates are on the cost of new machinery and materials, not al lowing anything for deteriora tion in value, such as wear and tear on the machinery and the exposure of the wires to all kinds of weather. Six per cent, on $11,750. would amount to $705 1 per year but even this would be cheaper than buying distillate at the present rates. .In regard to a mass meeting to settle the distillate question w wish to say that should a meet ing of this nature be held the only way to conduct it with any degree of fairness would be let each man vote according the taxes he pays. Otherwise many would vote who pay no taxes at all and in leaving the question to the taxpayers it nat urally follows that nobody should have a voice but those who pay taxes and these in accordance with the amount they pay. . Some very embarassing ques tions are being asked of the men high up these days. The presi dent of the steel trust is to asked why his company sells rails cheaper abroad than home. It is so impudent for congress to interfere thusly with one's private business. be Lorimer hustled from Chicago to Washington to vote against election of senators by the peo ple. We take it that he has no use for "the people" except it be those who are ready to "chip in" when someone is to be carried over. Webster says a "faction" is combination or clique of any kind, acting for their own int erests, especially if greedy, clamorous, and reckless of com mon good. M. Manning, the wool buyer, has purchased the Butte Cree company, trie wm. Ketue and the F. F. Knox clips at 14 J cents per pound. He has also purchas ed several other clips at lower prices, the lowest price paid be ing 101 cents. A. S. Rice returned on Wednesday from Portland where he had been viait- ing for aeveral weeka. Mrs. A. Boaquet arrived in thia city the latter part of laat week from her home in St. Paul to visit for several weeka with her parents and other rela tives in this eity and vicinity. Hiss Alberta Hadley who appeared at the American Theatre on Saturday and Sunday nights left on Wednesday morning for Portland.
