Billings. The annual school meeting takes -place on Monday next. Everyone ' should co-operate in this matter to the extent, at least, of giving a part of one day in the year to the consideration of public school questions. In many districts over the state an annual picnic is to De held on this day, and while this may be too much to exoect in this dis trict, everyone interested in the schools, of this city can be pres ent at the meeting and help the school officers in making this event a success. School build ings often are unsanitary, the grounds need attention. Attend the school meeting and take look at the buildings and the grounds. If they need no im provement show your apprecia tion to the members of theschoc board who brought about such conditions. If they do need im provements register your kick with that same board. The com mon schools of this country are its foundation stone and it is just as necessary that the boys and girls attending these schools have the proper pleasant and sanitary surroundings in order that they may be physically fit as to have the best of instructors to educate their minds. We are now informed that in stead of the usual and historical deficit the postoffiee department will show a surplus the last day of June of about or possibly more than 11,000,000.- For thirty years the balance in this department has uniformly been on the wrong siae oi tne ledger, and we had pretty much given up all hope that thi3 generation would see any change in the program. Two years ago the deficit was $17, 000,000. To have wiped this off the slate and accumulated a sur plus is an achievement which is certainly to - the high credit of the authorities. A dealer in a certain town ad vertises that there is no particu lar advantage in buying kerosene from traveling salesmen or mail order houses when he sells the very best grade in barrel lots at the same price which the sales men or mail order houses make. That, is the proper way to meet the mail order business. Give the buyer the same price on the same quantity of the same qual ity of goods, then advertise the matter, just as the mailorder house does. If half of the coun try merchants were willing to Spend a reasonable amount of money in advertising they could easily have half of the business which is now going to Chicago. "All.
