THE OFFICIAL PAPER FOR GIL
LIAM COUNTY
Mr. Sayer, a representative
of the Oregon Development
League, which includes the var
ious commercial clubs of the
state, will be in Condon to try
and reorganize the boosters of
this county. If Mr. Sayer can
make any headway in the mat
ter, the thanks of all the boost
ers will be due him. Heretofore
politics have been the leading
factor in the organizations that
have been started to exploit the
resources of the couhty and
town with the result that the
literature secured on the co-op
erative community plan from
theO-WR. &N. Co., has not
been distributed to men who
were largely interested in the
colinization of easterners to this
country and who would have
been glad to send the literature
to places where it would have
been appreciated and would have
brought quick returns. It is a
bout time that politics were e
liminated from organizations of
this kind in Condon and the cit
izens can, with a long pull, a
strong pull and a pull altogeth
er, accomplish what has beeh
needed for years to build
up the Wheat City and surround
ing territory, a real "Opportun
ity Club."

The business manager of the
Globe was in receipt this week
of a letter trom the advertising
manager of Dr. Pierce's wonder
ful discoveries who wanted to
sign a contract with us for run
ning their advertising for a
period of three years, they to
pay the stupendous sum of $i2
per year. When we stopped to
consider the fact that we charge
local merchants $36 per year
for the same amount of space
we made haste to return the
patent medicine contract and
inform them that we are not
conducting a paper for the pur
pose of placing before the
public such headlines as "Found
dfadin'the alley," "Asleep at
his Post," and "We cure men
free." A newspaper manager
or editor who declines to aid
public organizations that pro
mote the welfare of the public
but who will contract to run
patent medicine advertising
at one-third the rate charged
local merchants is about as popul
ar with the average person as the
Jap coolie who works for 75cts
a day is with the American
laborer who has a family te
support and must earn $2 a day
to pay expenses. Some editors
when asked to give publicity
free to some local movement
which would benefit all the peo
ple holler, "No Space," when
already they are carrying from
a column to a column and a
half of patent medicine ads
practically free of charge. The
Globe editor is proud to say
that business is sufficiently
good that he can make a living
without having to mix among
his local news such advertising
as is fit only for such papers as
the "Saturday Blade" and
the "Yellow Jacket."
