THE OFFICIAL PAPER FOR GIL ' LI AM COUNTY CITT ELECTION. It is up to the people of Con don to say at the next city elect ion if they want to continue in the same old rut the city has been in, in the past, or get out of the mire by. electing a few good substantial men who will help pull the city ..out of debt and eventually reduce our city taxes. Condon citizens can no longer keep their eyes, closed to the conditions that have ex isted here in the past. It is now up to them to see. that men are elected who will give us a sane and economical business admin istration. This town will never amount to much if we, as cit izens, do not take pride in see ing our city in a good condition financially, of Paris not long ago . went into business as a slaughterer of cat tle and dealer in meats, and its people have rejoiced ever 6ince in the lower cost of living that prevails there in consequence. It will net require any unnec essary or excessive booming to build Oresron into a great state during the next ten years. Sys tematic exploitation of the actual resources which ure found hero abundantly, the op portunity forsafe and sound in vestment in a!l kinds ot enter prises as well as in land and city property, presents an inviting field no other state possesses and one which should make Ore gon the most sought after slate in the union during the next decade. All the active citizen hip of this great and promis ing commonwealth have to do is to keep hammering away with their publicity compaigns and the result they seek to acconv plish is bound to come. W have the resources, soil, climate and the class of citizenship that, combined and destined, in time, to make Oregon the greatest state m the union. Professional Directory. If this is the con dition our city is in, what is going to happen when pay day cornea and the holders of the bonds come to our good city and demand payment : Where are we going to get the money with which to pay them? It is high time that we give these ques tions serious thought and act for the interests of the taxpayers, We need a business administra tion along new lines, and the way to get it is to try some new men with modern business ideas, who will give our city some of their time in helping us pull out from the heavy debt which is now weighing down on us with mighty force. We can doit. They have done it in oth er communities where the good citizens have felt it to b their duty. Condon citizens have this duty to perform in order to protect their own interests and the interests of the city. Can we afford to any longer p it off this vital and serious matter? It is up to the taxpayers to answer at the next general election. The announcement that a big firm of dealers in meat has re "duced its prices from three to seven cents a pound interests thousands of consumers, says the Spokane Review. With the announcement is coupled the significant assertion that the system of credit and de livery is largely responsible for the high cost of meat This assertion is in line with the claim of Secretary Wilson, of the department of agriculture, a year ago, that 'much of the high cost of living is due to the demands of housekeepers for ex tensive service. Such things, he added as marketing by telephone and having the goods delivered add not a little to the expensive ness of foods. The lesson would seem to be plain. One of the means by which the cost of living may be lowered is by cutting out the credit system, whose bad debts are paid by cash buyers, and by doing one's marketing in person. Another noteworthy pointer in this direction is that public or municipal markets, where the rentals and other operating ex penses are low, are aijecuve competitors and . regulators ' of ; j - 1 , mi m lo. run a newspaper, says an Oklahoma editor, "all a fel low has to do is to be able fo write poems, discuss the tariff and money question, umpire-H- Physician and Surgeon wraps, make a dollar do the work of ten, shine at a dance, measure calico, abuse the liquor habit, test whisky, subscribe to charity, go without meals, at tack free silver, defend bi metallism, sneer at snobbery, wear diamonds, invent adver tisements, overlook scandal, i i . appraise Daoies, delight pump kin raisers, minister to the af flicted, heal the disgruntled, fight to a finish, set type, mould opinions, sweep the office, speak at prayer meeting, stand in with everybody and everything.
