Reports received from the rep
resentative business men and
land owners of the different
sections of the county show that
they are thoroughly disgusted
with the result of the mass meet
ing held in the Court House in
this city last Friday evening.
The lack of courtesy and fairness
which was present at the meet
ing seems to be the cause of the
feeling which exists. These
people believe that the Booster
Club, in turning the meeting over
to the citizens for the purpose of
producing harmony between the
two factions that exist in this city
in order to secure the 0. R. N.
plan of publicity for the county,
did their part like men and it was
certainly to be expected that the
Booster Club should be given a
representative on the Board of
Directors of the new organize
tion. This, however, was deniea
them and this caused the with
drawal of the Arlington and May
ville people. Those with whom
we have had communication say
that they shall be delighted to see
the new organization meet with
Buccess in furnishing publicity to
the county but they decidedly re
fuse to become affiliated with the
Opportunity Leage or Association.
That their opinions tally exactly
with those of the Globe goes
without saying. Nothing could
please us more than to see the
new organization bring many
new people to the country for
new people mean more business
and we will certainly get our
share.
Noteworthy contributions in
the April number of the Phys
ical Culture Magazine are "Nox
ious effects of the Social evil,"
" The Value of Play as a Tonic,"
"Fifty Meatless Recipes," and
"The Teeth-How to Preserve
Them," together with many
other readable articles, and a
series of menus of vegetable
foods, with complete recipes for
their preparation. "The Jun
gle's Aftermath," Upton Sin
clair's sequel to his famous ex
pose of Packing-town, also be
gins in this number.
-We have called attention
several times to the fact that all
copy for changes of ads must be
brought to this office not later
than Tuesday of each week
This rule will hereafter be
strictly enforced for the reason
that ads brought in later than
Tuesday cannot possibly receive
the attention they should. Ad
vertisers should set aside a period
each week to attend to their adv'
ertising and this can be done
early as well as late. ' -
. That James J. Hill will build
an east and west line of railway
across Central Oregon, from
Ontario to Coos Bay, was stated
on good authority during the
past week. The projected line
will connect with the Grand
Trunk, the Hill road now being
built up the Deschutes, and with

lamette Valley, believed to be
another Hill property.
This will mean a gridiron of
new railroads for Oregon during
the coming few years that will
bring aoout a development in
this state never before approaphr
ed. All Central Oregon needs is
railroads; it has everything else
but people and the railroads will
bring them. v
A community in this county was
originally named Igo. But with
the residents it is rather I stay.

price continues to remain where
it now is.
Portland will have another
great flour mill soon. Balfour
Guthrie & Co., wheat and Hour
exporters , have completed plans
for erecting a big mill to cost
about $250,000.
In the early days the frontier
stockman scoffed at the wheat
raiser. When a few "newcom
ers" undertook to fence up some
of the range in this county and
to attempt farming they were
laughed at with scom. The
old timers did not think wheat-
raising would pay and they said
the range would be ruined. Now
the wheat barons, feudal succes
sors of the old cattle kings,
laugh at the irrigationists and
at the man who attemps diversi
fied farming. Their arguments
are in a class with those used by
the stockmen against the pio
neer wheatraisers. Irrigation
won't da Neither will intensi
fied farming pay in the dry land
section. The wheat baron does
not want to see the big grain
ranches broken up. But nature
will take its course in spite of
opposition. It always does.
Before many years there will be
a higher state of agriculture in
Gilliam County than prevails at
the present time.
Cattle and hogs have made
new records in the Portland live
stock market during the past
week. Hogs sold at the remark
abe price of $11.50 per 100 lbs
live weight, and steere of
the best grade brought $6.73 per
100 pounds. Mutton also attained
a record, a lot of good grade
lambs going at $12 a 100 pounds,
an unusual price for any season.
An interurban service that is
designed to meet the needs of
the cities of the state has just
been announced by the Harri
man lines. A gasoline moter car
will be put in service on the
main lme between Pendleton and
Umatilla on the O. R. N. with
in the coming week.
These motorcars are designed
to handle local business in the
territorylthey cover and serve the
the different communities much
in the same way as interurban
electric trains. They have been
found very convenient wherever
tried and will no doubt aid the
development of the districts
served to a great extent.

Mrs. Fred Adlard last Snnday.
Mrs. Ellen Palmer and her
grand daughters, the Misses
Lizzie and Jessie attended the

separates it wholly from politics
and gives the voters a fair
chance to express their choice.
Schools are a necessity - we must
educate the boys and girls and
we must have teachers. The

train and prepare these. Vote,
