State guaranty of bank de
posits will be one of the big
questions to come before the
next session of the legislature,
Already a bill has been thorough
ly drafted by A. W. Orton cf
Multnomah, and has been sub
mitted to the banking committee
of the Oregon State Grange. The
measure has been gone over care
fully and a second draft of the
measure has been prepared and
this is now being sent to the dif
ferent local granges throughout
the state for their suggestion and
aDDrovaL The bill will be pre
pared in time for the opening of
the legislature and will be backed
by the state grange, which will
make the enactment of the law
one of the chief objects during
the comm.? session. It has been
decided to confine the provisions
to the question of bank guaranty
alone, leaving other amendments
of the existing banking . law to
other bills. This will be done in
order that the guaranty plan
may not be embarrassed or
hampered by some objectional
clause or provision relating to
other bank legislation. The
main-purpose and intent of the
law is set out in the first two
sections of the proposed bill,
which set the time for the law
to become operative and pre
scribe the manner of the oper
ation of the law.
Ugly names in Oregon must go
' and at the first meeting of the
OregonGeographical board held in
Portland a few days ago, objec
tions were raised to absurd and
ridiculous appelations of places
throughout the state and an at
tempt will be made to change
them. It was decided to ask the
legislature for an appropriation
to defray the expenses of the
committee. One of the import
ant duties of the committee will
be the settling of disputes as to
what the real name of some val
ley, brook or mound is and an
other will be the selection of ap
propriate names for all sorts of
towns, rivers, mountains and
other places. John B. Horner
of Corvallis will have charge of
the work in Gilliam, Sherman,
Wheeler, Crook, Union, Polk and
Benton counties. The work in
other counties will be done by
other members of the board, and
all will be watched with interest
Echo, according to the plan dis
cussed at the board meeting,
may be known as Henrietta. The
name will carry a reminiscence
of the stirring Indian wars of
'56, at which time Ft Henrietta
was established in that vicinity
by soldiers from Ft Dalles. The
name was originally given in
honor of Henrietta Haller, wife
of Major Haller, in command at
The Dalles, who when the sol
diers were ordered into this sec
tion to fight Indians, furnished
them with a wagon to haul their
supplies. Places in this section
oddly named: Bakeoven,
Coyote, Gooseberry, Strawberry,
Lost Valley, Paper Sack, Scatter
Wagon, Ajax, Trailfork, Devil's
Butte, Antelope, Haystack, and
numerous others would give
work for this board.
