THE CHRISTMAS KUMBER.
Hundreds of copies of the
Christmas number of the Globe
"The Gilliam County Booster,"
have found their way to all parts
of the country during the past
week. The fact that all the ex
tra copies were sold on the very
day of going to press shows the
general appreciation of that is
sue, and on every side words of
praise were given the Globe ed
itors. !
With such issues, giving a
truthful discription of the coun
ty's resources, can be readily
seen the direct advantage of
mailing such papers to friends.
It can have but one result and
that is advertising Gilliam Co.
in the best possible manner.
The Globe editors, with the be
ginning of the New Year, expect
to give their readers more
news than ever before and
with them it means all the
news. Remember, the Globe
sets the pace and will be the
most widely read weekly in this
section of Eastern Oregon.
We see by the Washington Co.
papers, that a -big "boom" is on
in Forest Grove. We wonder if
they got their idea from the
Gilliam County Improvement As
sociation.
Fifty school children from
Chicago are to be brought to the
Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition
next year if the plan suggested
by Secretary Tom Richardson of
the Oregon Development League
is carried out They will also
visit Portland and other cities in
this state and when they return
home will write letters telling of
the trip and what they saw in
the Northwest. Exhibits of the
woods of this section, with indus
trial and scenic pictures, have
been used in the Chicago schools,
made up into sets and circulated
from one school to another, in
the teaching of geography.
The Panama Canal, in spite of
optimistic utterances with refer
ence to the progress made in its
construction, is evidently a source
of anxiety in Washington and
throughout the country. The
law imposes on the President the
duty of building the canal. It
is the most Hurculean work at
tempted in history, and the in
coming president upon whom
the burden is about to fall, is
wise in his effort to satisfy him
self that progress is being made
in the right way. It is known
that he intends to vi&it Panama
again in January and that he
will take with him a number of
engineering officers in no way
connected with the work. It is
characteristic :of the President
elect to thoroughly understand
any proposition that he has to
take up and the country will
doubtless profit by the careful
inspection and study he is about
to make.
Orna Fair at Alvllle.
By Mr. J. R. lta.
The Grange fair held at Alville
on December, ISth, was a great
success both financially nnd so
cially. The various booths, all
tastefully decorated, made a
cheerful appearence and the
many articles of fancy work,
burnt work, aprons, cushions,
and many other things that
were on sale were readily dis
posed of. The candy, china and
doll booths all did equally well
and the grab bag was a great
source of amusement throughout
the afternoon and evening.
Supper was served at six o'clock
and at midnight and from the
bounteous and delicious spread
set before the people it can be
truly said that there are some
famous cooks in that order.
The dance was well managed,
good music was furnished and
everybody went home saying,
"It takes the Grangers to show
us a good time."
Sometime and nanbm out at apace,
DAN opened a SECOND HAND PLACE;
Tola place was opened grand and neat
In a balldtng on MAIN STREET.
He no doubt thoogbt it would be grand
To always hsve al taepabUc'i command
Everything the people like.
Even to a second handed bike.
Many other things he hat embarked.
Soma tblngt that eame from Nosh' Ark.
