PRES. KERB RETURNS HOME
Explains Work of Farms To

DIIY FA UM, IS NOW ASSURED

President W. J. Kerr of the
Oregon Agricultural College, up
on his return toCorvallis the
first of the month from Wash
ington, D. C, announced the
successor his ellors in obtain
ing for Oregon two new agricul
tural experimental stations. As
mentioned in the Globe two
weeks ago, one station will be lo
cated at Ilormiston, the other
in Gilliam. Sherman or Morrow
county. The GIoImj also stated
that Dr. Kerr had been success
ful in securing the co-operation
of the department of agriculture
in the establishment and main
tainanceof the stations, as well
as having secured aid from the
federal government in the way
of equipment These stations
will bo equipped with the latest
scientific apparatus and will be in
charge of experts. The federal
government will also co-operate
in carrying on the work by fur
nishing special experts from the
department of plant industry.
Over a million acres of land in
Eastern Oregon will bo affected
by the work of these stations. It
is predicted that in from three
to five years the experiments
will result in an increase in re
turns to the farmers of these
districts of many hundreds of
thousands of dollars.
In discussing the work which
is to be carried on, President
Kerr said, "The establishment
of these two stations is only the
beginning of a movement which
will cover the entire state of Or
egon. Ah fast as conditions de
mand the work will be extended
to southeastern and southern
Oregon. The agricultural col
lege and station will co-operate
with the farmers and corpora
tions throughout eastern Oregon
in carrying on special experi
ments. The scope of the work
will only be limited by the re
sources at tho command of the
experts in charge. This great
work which means so much to
the state of Oregon will be car
ried on with comparatively small
expense to the state itself. The
federal government will bear
practically all of the initial ex
pense and a large share of the
expense of maintenance."
The work will cover expri
ments in both irrigation and dry
farming. It is hoped that the
dry lands which are cultivating
and yielding but one crop every
two years will be made to yield
a crop annually. President Kerr
is anxious for the support and
co-operation of the farmers and
business men throughout the
state in . the carrying forward
and extension of this great work.

Jacob Larch, who is now in the
east, had the misfortune on Fri
day of last week of . losing his
house by fire assisted by a can of
giant powder. There are many
different stories afloat as to the
way it happened but as near as
can be learned, the man who was
working for John McEachern
drilling a well on the Larch farm
near Clem went to the house to
get some Giant powder from the
cistern where he had it cached
and left it sitting on a bench out
side while stepped into the house
for a few minutes, On coming
out ho forgot the powder and
went to the drilling machine and
after some time noticed that the
house was in flames. Seeing that
the fire was beyond control and
fearing that the powder would
explode, he stayed away and af
ter a few minutes the powder
did explode, scattering bits of
the house and pieces of the stove
for hundreds of feet

Last Monday evening's council
meeting was a busy session as
most important business was
brought up by Mayor Farnsworth
for the decision of the council
men.
The first matter to be taken
up was new iron water mains
to replace the wooden pipes. Mr.
Fish, of Crane & Co. of Portland,
was present to give the council
an idea of the best material and
cost The 8.000 feet required,
7i inches inside measurements,
with necessary connections, he
estimated at a cost of about
17,000. The approximate to
tal expense of completed job
would be between 112,000 and
$13,000, figured several council-
men. The council was united on
rushing the work to early com
pletion and definite action will
be taken at the next meeting.
The laying of new mains will it
is believed,, lower the cost of run
ning the water system and place
it on a paying basis and perhaps
lower the present high water
rate, which is due to the loss of
nearly, half of the water pumped
iu the wooden pipes from the
station on account of leaks. It
is now claimed that the wooden
mains were not properly placed.
Bills amounting to $1,575.65
were ordered paid. D. Tierney
for the 0. R. & N. brought in a
bill of $715. 65 for a gasoline en
gine and pumping plant which
the city had secured from the
company several years ago and
had been using since that time.
This matter created much dis
cussion as the price asked was
thought exhorbitant, and the
bill was held over for investiga
tion. Mayor Farnsworth then took
up the present railroad yards
