in history is secure.
Now it is said that President
Roosevelt will be a candidate for
the Senate to succeed Senator

reported that Mr. Bryan will be

On next Thursday the people
of this grand country of ours
will give thanks for all the bless
ings and prosperity enjoyed d ur
ine the past year. President
Roosevelt has designated the 26t
of November as a day of gen
eral Thanksgiving and prayer,
and on tnat day recommenas
that all people shall cease from
their daily work, and in their
homes or in their churches meet
devoutly to thank the Almighty
for the many and great blessings
they have received in the past
and to pray that they may be
given the strength to order their
lives so as to deserve a continu
ation of these blessings in the
future." In his proclamation
the President says, "The growtl
in wealth and population has
surpassed even the growth in
territory. Nowhere else in the
world is the average of individual
comfort and material wellbeing
bo high as in our fortunate land. ' '
Eastern Oregon sheepmen are
preparing to bring a sirong pres
sure to bear upon the next legis
lature to enact another scalp
bounty law, especially as to coy
otes, which have lately become
more destructive of sheep than
for years past There will be
protest again from the farmers
and the cattlemen and orchardists
who consider the coyote as a
friend rather than a foe because
he destroys not only sheep but
rabbits, which are destructive
of fruit trees, alfalfa fields, grain
fields and gardens. The move
ment for a bounty on coyote
scalps will find considerable sup
port now in western Oregon,
where this predacious beast is
' Becoming uuuieruua, aa ne never
has been before. There was a
scalp bounty law for awhile, and
it was a source of so much fraud,
to say nothing of very heavy ex-
' pense even if the frauds had i.ot
. been practiced, that it was re
pealed. Such a law now would
entail a heavy cost upon the tax
- payers, yet it might be a profit
able investment. The sheepmen
of eastern Oregon recognize the
fact that they would be especial
ly benefitted, and propose to pay
half the cost; they ask for a
bounty of $1.50 on coyote scalps,
agreeing to pay 75 cents them
selves, the state to pay the rest
