A busy session was the unad
journed council meeting of last
Monday evening, at which all
the city officers were present ex
cept Councilman J. A. Scott.
As the result of this meeting five
saloon licenses were grantedto
the following firms-W. H. Sear
cy & Co., E..C. Rogers, Campbell
Bros., George Wassqn, and
P1ntK Ttma : all nf whom took
out a three-months license at the
rate of $1000 per annum.
Since the Supreme Court had
passed the Medford decision and
since Condon's charter is similar
to that of Medford the city coun
cil believes it has the right to
grant licenses and thus secure
the much needed revenue. An
ordinance was drawn up regu
lating the saloons and same was
passed, restricting the saloons to
five and also protecting them in
as far as they comDlied with the
provisions of the ordinance. The
saloons must close at 1 A. M.
and also Sundays as well as
rim strict places of business
Although the license question
was the main object of, the meet
ing much other business was
- transacted and the session was
"made a lengthy one. A. S. Rice
was given the contract of spread
ing crushed rock on lower Main
St as advertised during the past
week. Wm. Cook also made a
bid but Mr. Rice was awarded
the contract at $1.30 per yard,
the covering of rock to be eight
inches thick. The work will be
delayed as no contract has been
signed.
Much time was given to the
discussion of the water rate as
per meter reading for the John
Harrison ice t1ant and it was
decided that the balance of $92.50
as given by the meter, was a
fair rate and the same ordered
collected.
The council, uoon the advice
of several citizens present, start
ed upon a crusade movement
which will mean much to the ap
pearance and sanitary condition
of the city as well as for the
comfort of its residents. The
city marshal was ordered to
have removed all the benches
along Main Street, as they were
a nuisance, serving only to gath
er a crowd and blocking the side
walks to the hindrance of pedes
trians. The marshal was also
instructed to notify certain bus
iness houses to restrain from pa
ins: ud freight in front of their
warehouses and thereby blocking
the sidewalks as has been the
custom heretofore. Owners of
bad sidewalks will be notified
unless their walks are repaired
and put in safe condition. 4 'Nails
must be driven down and broken
boards replaced," said the coun
cilmen in unison. The Condon
Steam Laundry and certain other
places of business were ordered
to make sewer connections .with
the city main before the first of
December or the same would be
made by the city and charged to
the property owners.
other were seen to advantage.
Beautiful festoons of chrys
anthemums and flags adorned
the table, while tricolor streamers
strunof from the chandelier over
the center of the table to all sides
of the ro m, added to the decor
ative scheme of the evening. .
Seated around the banquet
table were Misses Lillian Ranney
and Fitzmaurice, Messrs. J. E.
Burdett, R. M. Rogers, G. S.
Taylor, N. Laughrige, Meresse,
SwafTord. Keene. Page. Elston,
S. Campbell, Cooper, and H. A.
Hartshorn.
After the banauet Miss Ranney
delighted those present with
several piano selections after
which all joined in singing old
familiar songs, ending with
'Sweet Dreams, Bryan."

quitted on the charge of man
slaughter in the circuit court at
The Dalles on last Friday even
ing after three hours delibera-
I tion by the jury. The trial came
to an end that afternoon, when
at six o'clock the case was given
to the jury for its decision.
The case was one in which
Shaughnessy, who formerly lived
near Condon, stabbed to death
, A. A. Wilcox on October 1.
Wilcox was a bartender in the
Barr saloon of The Dalles. The
trouble arose over Shaughnessy's
doir and it was shown that
: - Shaughnessy stabbed Wilcox in
self-defense. The dt-fense
""was in charge of Attorney
N. J. Sinnott
Joseph Shaughnessy left The
' Dalles Saturday for a visit to
, his old home in Massachussetts
where he will spend the winter
with his parents.
As the result of an election bet,
one of the most enjoyable, and
sumptuous banquets ever given
in this city was held at the home
of Mrs. W. J. Case last evening,
when the Bryan followers were
the guests of the Taft men. All
the election differences between
the regular boarders were on
this occasion cast to the winds
and it was a jolly company which
gathered around the festal board
laden with all sort3 of good
things.
The fatest Republican spring
chickens which could be found
as well as the proverbial rooster
which was supposed to have
stood by Bryan for at least three
campaigns, were roasted and
occupied the center of the table,
on each Bide of which had been
placed tasty decorations of the
national colors from which Taft
and Sherman portraits on one
side and Bryan and Kern on the

Don't Forget
V
It wap Poor Ricbard who said:
! "A little neglect may breed great
mischief; for want of a nail, the
hoe was lost: for want of a shoe
tbe horse was loaU for want of a
bono tbe rider was lost."
Look to tbe nail in time and do
mischief can follow. Tbe shoe will
be made safe, tbe horse Bared, and
the rider made secure. Look care
fully to your eyes at the first hint
of "soWtbing tbe matter." It
may be a floating speck seen be
fore tbe eye. It may be a head
ache, sometimes least thought of
as coming from the eyes, but often
having its origin there. It may
be "eye blur", obliging you to shift
tbe position or angle of your book,
paper, or sewing, to see it easily.
The eyes may water. Tbe eye
may get tired. You may feel tbe
sensation of having your eyes
strained, overworked. Anything
that makes you conscious that you
have eyes is a danger signal. Tbe
nail is then loose. Look out for
the shoe. Seek relief where it is to
be bad. The best optician is none
too good. Stop and think: Its your
eyes: They should be treated by
none but a thoroughly competent
and experienced optician. You
should know that there is a reli
ability and responsibility back of
the treatment This is even more
importait than the, first step, be'
cause glasses fitted hap hazard are
as likely as not to increase tbe
trouble. Be exceedingly careful
of your eyes. . You get but one
pair in your whole life. Having
recognized the danger signal, come
to us and have your eyes EXAM
INED FREE. We will be able
to tell you what the trouble is. If
you do not need glasses we will
say so. We succeed where others
