IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.
The value of a county organi
zation has at last been discover
ed by the people of Gilliam coui
ty, and ranchers and business
men from every section have
joined the movement with great
enthusiasm. The representative
body of men, who gathered to
gether in this city on Tuesday
evening, is to be praised for its
work. They have realized for
some time that Gilliam county
needed such an organization, that
their interests would never be
properly represented unless they
were united in some sort of an
...association. Now that the Gilliam
County Improvement Association
is launched, there is no doubt
but that vast results willl be
forthcoming. Gilliam county is
in sore need of advertising, it
needs more people to farm its
rich soil, it needs the experiment
al farm station to teach its farm
ers to secure far better results
than have heretofore been receiv
ed. Such are the aims of the As
sociation and the executive com
mittee, which has been empower
ed to transact its business, has
already done much during the
past few days. With these men
at the head Gilliam county's in
terests are bound to prosper and
grow irom tnis time on. it is
hoped that manymore of the
people will join in the movement,
for in union there is strength'
and the Association, with its aim,
needs all the support that can be
given.
THE GRAIN RATE HEARING.
A grain rate hearing was held
in this city on Wednesday. The
state railroad commission exam
ined a large number of the farm
ers of this county as to the cost
of growing wheat, also to get an
idea of the profit of the farmer
and to pass upon the justice of
the grain rates now charged by
the 0. R. & N. Company. The
commission while in Condon was
able to get valuable information
which is to be used later when
the matter comes up. There is
no doubt that the present grain
rates are high and it is under
stood that the commission will
endeavor to reduce them. The
three men who compose the com
mission have a high responsibili
ty, they are endeavoring to ad
just the rates upon a fair basis
and the farmers' interests will
be properly looked after.
Prosperity has been rife in all
parts of Oregon, and all the
election had to do with it one
way or the other was to give
some men an excuse to wait
Now that even that is useless
people are closing great contracts
and building activity will be
more marked than at any time
in the history of the state. Con
don has ''joined the prosperity
procession and the Wheat City
already shows great progress
and activity in every branch of
business life. . '
Even more than guarantee of
bank deposits, Mr. Bryan is now
doubtless in favor of guaranteed
vote deposits.
