It's fair time. At The Dalles,
at Walla Walla, at Spokane, and
throughout the various counties
of Oregon, displays of fruits,
grains and live stock have been
made thespast week. It's fair
time and we have just participa-
ted in a most successful county
fair at the thriving town of May
ville, our neighbor. ..The support
given those fairs is more gen
erous than it has been in years
and this same spirit was display
ed at our own local fair. A year
ao, Condon was scantily repre
sented at the Mayville fair; this
year large delegations went to
see the exhibits on both days.
To the rancher, the stockman,
the farmer there is more to the
county fair than the mere dis
play of farm products. It is the
test time of his year's work. It is
a contest for superiority by which
will be measured to a certain ex
tent the success of the past
twelve months, for his best ef
iorts are pitted against tnose ot
every other exhibitor at the fair
and the award of the judges
means the greatest victory or
the greatest disappointment of
the year. k """"
To the successful exhibitor,
victory is spelled on the strip of
gilt-lettered blue or red ribbon
which is presented to him by the
judges. . After all the test of the
real success or a fair, big or
small, is not to see how many
exhibits and displays can be
crowded into a pavilion but to
: reveal the number of progress
ive and enterprising farmers
there are in a certain locality,
The Mayville fair has shown who
the ''live ones" are. -
