There is no time for delay.
President W. J. Kerr, of the
State Agricultural College, In a
' communication to Mr. D. B.

of the conditions that are to be

In this section. The importance
of such an institution to the
farming interests is recognized
by all. A meeting should be
called, the proposition discussed
and action taken pro or con.
The letter of President Kerr is
'self-explanatory and is here
s reproduced.
My dear Sir:
Since visiting EaRtern Oregon,
' I have given the matter of ex
perimental work in dry farming,
- etc., very careful consideration,
and ant of the opinion that a dry
farm experiment station should
be established either in Sherman
or Gilliam County. Should such
station be established under satis
factory conditions, the U. S.
Department of Agriculture would
no doubt co-operate with the

FAIR COHTTEE ANNOUNCES URGE U5I OF AWARDS
From all sides, unstinted praise
is heard for the active and suc
cessful management of the fair
by the members of the executive
committee, the heads of the var
ious departments and for the
grangers of Gilliam and Wheeler
counties, who made the Mayville
agricultural show a big success.
The number of entries ex
ceeded that of a year ago by fify
one entries. At last year's fair
there were 549 entries, this year
the number reached 600. The
Globe in its issue of last week
stated that the number of entries
a year ago was greater than this

State in the work and in the ex
pense of maintenance.
If a station Bhould be estab
lished in Gilliam county, will suit
able land in the necessary quan
tity, (say about 100 bo 320 acres)
be available for the work without
cost to the state? Do you tnink
it possible, also, that such per
manent improvements as may be
required could be furnished by
the people of Gilliam county? If
the county, or people, bhould fur
nish the land, the title could re
vert to the donors at the conclu
sion of the work. Should the
land be leased, however, it would
be necessary to have the lease
cover a period of at least ten to
twenty years, otherwise, the U.
S. Department would not be wil
ling to do anything.
Since it is important that plans
be completed at once so that a
report can br made to the Legis
lature with the request for appro
priations, I shall appreciate it if
you will will write me at your
earliest convenience in regard to
the interest the people of Gilliam
county may have in such a sta
tion and the extent to which they
may be depended upon to provide
the necessary land, etc
Very sincerely yours,
W. J. Kerr.

John H. Stevenson, of Port
land, was here the forepart of
the week in conference with the
Gilliam county democracy. He
is one of the best informed men
on Oregon politics, having been
for seven years on the staff of
the Portland Evening Telegram
and for several years was politi
cal editor. He was deputy dis
trict a'torney under Manning
and is now associated with John
Logan in the practice of the law.
While here he infused new hopes
in local democratic leaders.
Mr. Stevenson is rather pleased
over the prospects of Mr. Bryan
to carry most oi the counties in
Eastern Oregon. Mr. Steven
son's father is the state game
warden.
