Condon is doing herself an in
justice by not having houses to
rent People are calling at the
real estate and newspaper offices
every day in search of dwelling
houses but there is none to be
had. Local capital might profit
ably be invested in houses and
cottages that would yield good
returns. Many newcomers can
not on first arriving build a home
for their families. They want to
assure themselves that climatic
conditions will be satisfactory,
school advantages good and
work available for the head of
the family. Condon's climate is
healthy and salubrious, the edu
cational advantages are excellent
and there i3 considerable work
to be had. If Condon is to en
joy her full share of the immi
gration that is coming to Oregon,
she must be ready to care for the
new arrivals.
In another week the Oregon
colleges will open their doors to
the student world. Already a
number of Gilliam county young
men and women have decided
what institution they will attend
during the coming year. Some
go to complete courses of study
began some years ago; others
will enter college for the first
time. Ambitious young men and
women can readily see what an
adjunct a college education will
be to their success. Oregon is
fortunate in having a number of
strong, private colleges besides
the state university and the agri
cultural college. Small colleges
have many advantages for they
seem to meet more completely
the needs of bringing the
pupil into closer touch with his
teachers; an element which is
lacking in a great measure in the
larger institutions. The letting
out of the contract some weeks
since for a new $50,000 main
building, modernlyj equipped on
the Willamette university cam
pus, has once again brought that
splendid institution to public
notice. Standing as it does as
the pioneer educational institu
tion in the Northwest, it has an
enviable record. Since 1848,
' 'Old Willamette" has been close
ly allied with the development of
the northwest country. Its stu
dents and alumni are scattered
throughout the western states
doing their humble part in
building up the commonwealth.
With increased facilities, hun
dreds of young people are to go
forth from her college walls well
equipped for life's battles.
The country press has been
besieged the past few weeks
with a new "gag" alleged to be
a "news service" consisting of
weekly letters. The latest is the
cranium evolution of a couple of
reporters on one of the Portland
papers; another is conducted by a
reporter on a Salem paper. It's
a popular movement among un
derpaid city pencil-pushers. The
country press has sufficient good,
live, local news matter to make
its columns interesting without
having to resort to the publica-
tion of this copyrighted "stulT."
Country newspapers know
where to find feature and spe
cial articles. These alleged news
services have no more reason
for existence than barnacles on
a ship.
