The primary election system
is growing in favor because the
people wish to rule through their
servants and not to be ruled by
bosses. In Oregon the old con
vention system is dead though
politicians of the old school are
doing all they can to discredit
the new law. The people have
regained their political prerog
atives and they mean to cling
to them. In Washington the
primary law has brought many
candidates before the voters
good men who would not have
entered the political arena under
the old convention system. Gov
ernor Cummings of Iowa, has
proved himself to be thoroughly
imbued with the spirit of the
direct primary method of select
ing candidates for office by cal
ling a special session of the state
legislature to so amend the Iowa
direct primary law as to make it
applicable to the emergency
caused by the death of Senator
Allison. Under the governor's
call the legislature was convened
in special session August 31. .
When a traveling theatrical
troop can remain in a town the
size of Condon for a full week
and play every night to comfort
ably well filled houses, one may
truthfully remark that Condon
is the queen city of the Interior,
and is not to be rated with other
more or less sleepy towns in
Eastern Oregon. Again we say,
keep your eye on Condon, the
Wheat City.
A western congressman is
quoted as saying that when . he
first entered Congress he wond
ered how he ever got there, but
later on he wondered how any
of them ever got there.
Speaking of political issues of
the day nobody but the spell
binders who are now committing
their speeches to memory and
rehearsing the more dramatic
passages.
Well, the only pessimists in
Condon now are those who are
wondering how to house 2,000
people here in 1910.
