It is not thought that Gilliam
county wheat growers will at
tempt to sow the new Alaska
wheat which is reported as giv
ing such phenomenal yields.
There are other kinds of wheat
which can be grown here with
marked success without farmers
branching out into unsatisfact
ory experiments. In the vicinity
of Pendleton wheat growers
have taken a fancy to a variety,
known as the Dale Glory which
is a good yieldcr and thrives in
dry soil - Experimental farms
in each county are practically out
of the realm of feasibility at this
time in the history of the state.
The state is maintaining two
experiment stations, one at Cor
vallis and another at Union, for
the benefit of Oregon farmers.
County experimental stations
are costly at best and many of
their investigations and endea
vors are often in the line of
mere eAperimcuui. 11 la not SO
with the state experimental sta
tions, they do valuable research
work and conduct experiments
that are of practical value. Dr.
James Withycombe, director of
the Oregon Experiment Station
at Corvallis, cautions Oregon
wheat growers, saying that while
he has not had the opportunity
of seeing the "Alaskan" wheat
' grown, it corresponds very close
"""fSriety of wheat known as
"Egyptian" wheat "This wheat
has been grown on a small scale
at this station for some years,
and we find it of little commer
cial value. Hence we suggest
that our fanners do not become
too enthusiastic over this new
wheat until its merits have been
more fully and conclusively
demonstrated," says he.
A rather busy week, this was.
Harvesting in full blast, revival
meetings in progress, a big tent

attractions offered to Condonites
since our last issue. All the en
tertainments were well patron
lzed, too. Condon is winning a
reputation as a good show
town." To maintain it, Condon
must let it be known that it will
not patronize bum" traveling
theatrical aggregations.
A reader stopped the editor on
the street the other day. "See
here, what are you fellows up to,
now, in your last issue you were
boosting for Arlington." The
editor was on the scent of a news
item, excused himself and passed
on. A little farther the editor
was accosted again by a subs
criber. Well to be brief, we're too
busy to answer such questions.
Arlington is in Gilliam county
and besides Brother Norvel says
it's a good place in which to live.
And we say, as the little pigs
remarked to the old sow: "We
ain't no hogs. "
Keep the Mayville fair in mind.
A Bulletin issued by the Ore
gon Agricultural College exper
iment station and prepared es
pecially for distribution among
the farmers who attended the
lectures given on the Farming
Demonstration train provided by
the 0. R. & N. in a cooperative
effort with the O.A.C. and the
Experiment Station to direct at
tention to improved methods of
husbandry adaptable to the agri
cultural conditions of Eastern
Oregon, has been received by
The Globe. The pamphlet con
tains a resume of the lectures
and makes interesting reading.
Many of the farmers in and near
Condon who attended the lec
tures will, with the aid of this
bulletin, be able to refresh their
memories and obtain valuable
hints.
