That Gilliam county is one of
the best counties iu the wheat
belt there is but little doubt The
strength and virility of its soil
was tested this year as perhaps
never before as this was one of
the dry years. In spite of the
extreme dryness, and, in some
instances, little more than the
proverbial style of squaw farm
ing used, the yield will be well
up to the average. Farmers who
have been here for years are sur
prised to see such an amount of
grain. Gilliam county is second
to none in the production of
wheat
. Condon has the greatest sum
mer weather in Oregon. People
from the Willamette valley are
surprised to notice how much
cooler it is here than in the sun
baked valley. They forget that
Condon is 2,881 feet above sea
level and that gentle breezes fan
the warmest days of summer.
Thunder storms are rare and

lhe lone Froclaimer did a
clever stunt last week. Editor
Ward sent to the Portland Com
mercial club a box containing
some of the finest samples of
6
wheat ever grown in Morrow
county. Needless to state that
they attracted much attention
. tcaused many to consult the
map to locate lone.
According to the Government
regulations there are four kinds
of whiskey: whiskey, near whis
key, imitation whiskey, and stuff
that looks like whiskey. The
four kinds appear to be very
scarce in the "dry" counties.
A Missouri man saved two per
sons from drowning and was
soundly berated by his wife for
getting his clothes wet Being
a gentleman as well as a hero,
he refrained from telling her
"to dry up."
At the rate Theodore Roose
