"Each team limited to 12 men,
each player to be booked on one
team only."
This clause appeared in The
Globe's issue of July 3rd in the
Fourth of July program and also
on the tri-colored, advertising
program compiled and printed by
The Globe for Messrs. Hunt, the
druggist, and Williams, the jew
eler. Among some of the busi
ness men there appears to be a
controversy regarding that pro
vision. For the benefit of its
readers, The Globe will state that
the said clause was inserted on
the program at the request of
the Official Athletic committee
consisting of Fred Edwards and
Oscar Veatch, in the same man
ner as another provision govern
ing field events was also placed
on the program. The clause
referred to was not intended
to work a hardship on any team
but rather to prevent any two
or more defeated team3 booked in
the tournament to form a nine
from the better players of two or
more teams or to secure add!
tional players, to win the series.
The provision was fair, just and
necessary. No one maintains
that the said program was offi
ciai Dut tne clause at issue
was official in that the request
that it be printed came from
official sources the committee in
charge of athletics. Programs
issued at fairs, or at celebrations
of any kind, are always consider
ed unofficial unless otherwise
designated.
An Astoria brewer is manufac
turing a popular drink called
"'near beer," for consumption in
dry counties. It is said to look
like beer, smell like beer and
taste like beer and if you drink
enough of it, you will get full.
Most of the country press along
the 0. R. &. N. has acknowledged
receipt of sample cases and pro
nounced it good. That settles
its status. Edi'al Oregonian.
It's Maltona that makes Brother
Harvey envious. It's advertised
elsewhere in these columns.
Col. Scott has so well diagnosed
the Astoria product that he too,
must have received a sample
case. Came, 'fess up!
The death of John F. Caples,
of Portland, who died at his
home there last Friday morn
inng, removes one of the best
lawyers from the ranks of the
Oregon bar. For years he bore
the title of judge though he
never occupied a position on the
bench. He was one of Oregon's
best speakers and a conscien
tious and patriotic citizen.
