The Democrats did not get
the better of the Republicans for
a running mate for their presid
ential nominee. J. W. Kern, of
Indiana is as little known to the
West as James S. Sherman, of
New York. The vice-presidency
doe3 not appeal to big-cal-ibei'politicians
and yet it was
through the vice-presidency that
Theodore Roosevelt gained en
trance to the inner parlors of the
White House.

Naturally the labor of working

Here's to the Condon
boosters, may their lungs never
grow weak!
Two Oregon cities are contest
ing for the title of 'Cherry City"
Salem and The Dalles ' have
""jdrawn swords. Let the contest
Vage! Both cities are the centers
pf districts where luscious cher
ries grow in abundance. Salem has
befcn known as the Cherry City
forj a number of years but a res
olution passed by the Pacific
"oast ' -Nurserymen association
Wfuch met in Salem a year ago
conferred on that municipality
the name of "Cherry City."
The official action of so strong
and representative a body of
horticulturists clinched Salem's
claim to the title. The Dalles
still aspires for cherry honors
and caused the Willamette Valley
delegates to the mid-summer
meeting of the State Horticul
tural Society to sit up and take
notice of The Dalles' first cherry
fair which was a revelation to
many. Just why The Dalles per
sistently aspires to the title of
"Cherry City" no one has been
able to explain for the reason
- that the adjoining districts grow
.other fruits quite as abundantly
as cherries. The Dalles peaches
are the first and last to reach
the market and are of except
..ionally fine qualities. The
Dalles cherry fair was nurelv of
Jocal interest and the exhibitors
Wrireall from The Dalles and
sections near-by. Salem has
held two cherry fairs with sig
nal success and exhibitors from
every section of the Willamette
valley were in attendance.
That Salem will eventually be
recognized as the Oregon Cherrv
City is assured; indeed the Cap
ital City has already won her
laurels. .
Mrs. W. S. Farr was a Rock
Creek visitor this week.
H. N. Anderson of Pine Ridge
was in town Wednesday trading
with our merchants.
Frank A. Welch,' secretary of
the Oregon State Board of Agri
culture, is mailing copies of the
Oregon state fair premium list
for 1908. The program is most
attractive and prizes reach.near-
ly $15, 000. Many new exhibitors
are securing space and several
herds have been purchased to be
exhibited at the fair; entries in
the racing department are larger
and consist of a better class of
horses than ever before raced in
the northwest At Salem, Sept
ember 14 to 19, inclusive.
