Steps are to be taken .to add
the Oregon California land
grant," if recovered by the United
States Government, to the irre
ducible school fund of this state.
Superintendent Ackerman will
head the movement to have the
Oregon delegation in Congress
take steps to have such a grant
made as soon as the land has re
turned to the ownership of the
United States. The land was
granted by the Government to
aid the development of the State
of Oregon through the building
of a railroad. It is said that the
railroad company has sold part
of the land for practically enough I
money to make up the total to
which it would be entitled at the
maximum rate on the whole
grant Having refused to carry
out the terms of the grant and
aid in the development of the
state, the company has no fur
ther claim on it The best use
this land can be put to is to turn
it over to the public schools of
this state. The improved con
dition of our public schools would
very appreciably aid in the de
velopment of the state.
Market days are being held in
"many towns at the present time
throughout Eastern Oregon and
the same are proving very suc
cessful The first of a series
was held in Heppner on last Sat
urday and the town was crowded
with people from the country
and lots of money changed hands
on that day. The sales included
horses, farming implements, sad
dies and other articles and the
prices received were very satis
factory to those who brought
goods to be sold. Wherever
these market days are being held
goods are being disposed of in
short order and they are consid
ered not only a convenience but
a great benefit to the commnity
We suggest that the proposition
be taken up in Condon and that
regular market days be held here
in the future.
Although the President has ex-
perienced a nominal defeat in his
contention for four battleships
instead of two, it is known that

been agreed that two battleships
oi the largest size shall be added
to the Navy every year, result
ing in twenty new battleships
for every decade, is really as
much and more than the Presi
dent's contention. This program
of adding twenty battleships ev
ery ten years will make the Navy
of the United States second to
none on the planet except that
of Great Britain and will enable
the country to keep two power
ful fleets, one on the Pacific, the
other on the Atlantic coast, and
will at least secure our home de
fense beyond perad venture.
With the completion of the. .Pan
ama Canal, there would, of course
be means for the rapid transfer
of naval strength to either coast,
or it could be quickly assembled
at the Isthmus if it should be
necessary to defend that water
way.' -v ... I

The Commercial Club of Walla
Walla has passed resolutions
urging the railroad companies to
grant a 'one-fare rate for the
round trip, by continuous passage
between points in interior Wash
ington and Oregon and the sea
side rescrts of these two states.
This organization has requested
the Commercial bodies of East
ern Oregon, Washington and
Idaho, as well as the Portland
Commercial Club, to pass similar
resolutions. It is hoped that
favorable action may be taken
by all, as the people of the in
terior should be given the op
portunity of visiting the coast
especially during the summer
months, at the least possible
cost
Everyone in this vicinity should
make an effort to hear the lec
tures to be given by the members
of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege from the platform of the 0.
R. & N. demonstration train at
the depot on Tuesday, May 12,
between the hours of 8:15 and
9:15 a. m. The men who are to
speak on the subjects of summer
fallow, chemistry of the soil, hor
ticulture, rotation of crops, ani
mal husbandry and general cul
ture methods, are all specialists
in their work and will give valu
able information, both instruct
ive and of great benefit to the
farmers of this territory. The
train will also stop at Clem be
tween the hours of 9:45 and 10:45
the same morning. Do not for
get the time and let us all make
a special effort to be present
