Monday from a two weeks visit
with friends in the Rose City.
R. II. Robinson transacted
business in Arlington Monday.
F. M. Pliter came up from
Portland on Monday to attend to
business interests.
Miss Grace Beeson, who has
been staying in town for some
time, went to Mayville the first
of the week, having been callec
home by the illness of her
mother.
Brunzel & Son shipped twe
carloads of cattle on last Satur
day. District Attorney Collier passed
through town Monday on his
way home from a business trip
to Portland.
Con Schott of Olex came to
town the first of the week to at
tend to business matters.
William Brunzel left Thursday
morning for the Mitchell country
where he will round up a cat
load or two of cattle. .
Mrs. Overlander is visiting
with her daughter, Mrs. Tom
Scott, this week.
A leap year ball will be given
in the hall at Alville on Friday
evening, February 14th. A good
time is assured. The music will
be furnished by Vivian Collins
and Chas. Wakeman. Supper
will be served upstairs in the
hall. - -
H.A. Stewart of Dry Fork was
in Condon Monday and purchas
ed a $40 graphophone and some
records of R. L. Hunt

S. B. Barker left Tuesday
on a trip through the east.
The first place he visits is Chica
go where he will order a large
stock of dry goods for The S. B.
Barker Co. 's store. From there
he will go to Boston on other
business and will also probably
visit a few days with relatives
at the old home in Maine.
The fall wheat crop was in
more danger of destruction the
past week than it has been for
years. Had the cold weather of
the past week continued through
out the Inland Empire, without
snow on the ground, the damage
would have been serious as the
plants are entirely, unprotected,
Everything now depends on the
weather of the remaining winter
and everyone is crying for snow
before zero weather makes us

Mrs. Mabel Loomla Todd, wife of the
well known astronomer of Amherst

she and her husband go to some re
mote region where be can carry on
bis astronomical observations to ad
vantage and she can become acquaint

the past season she made herself
familiar with the bablts and character
istics of many South American tribes

Mars from the top of the Andes. She
learned many new facts In regard' to
the civilization of tbe Incas. Mrs.
Todd is a charming woman whose
tact and good sense make ber as pop
ular with the primitive peoples among
whom she travels as she is In the ex
clusive drawing rooms of Boston,
A Frisnd For Poor Dogs.
Mrs. Laura Comstock Dunlop, author
and society woman, has asked the' city
of Memphis to appolut her collector of
dog taxes. Mrs. Dunlap Is a human
itarian and lover of dogs. She be
lieves If abe was collector she could
prevent some of the abuses which are
alleged to appertain to this depart
ment Dogs of high degree, it is said,
were gathered up on the streets In
stead of the unlicensed strays and
were shipped to other cities and sold.
Stray dogs when captured were killed
by drowning, a death that Mrs. Dun
lap considers more painful than the use
of the hypodermic syringe, which she
would substitute for the tank. Capa

ministering to the widows and orphans
of tbe Monongah mine disaster has bad

tled upon each of tbe bereaved ladles,
