ing another attempt the sentries
were doubled Sunday night

Trial on Condition of Thaw's Mind,
New York, Jan. 17. When the
trial of Harry Thaw was resumed
this horning, Dr. Charfcs ,F. Bing
ham, of Pittsburg, was called to the
stand. ' The purpose of his testimony
waa to show the .state of mentality
at different stages of the defend
ant's lfe. -
He testified that while a child
Thaw was nervous and appeared ir
rational In the Tombs.
.. Dr. Sidney RudUell Wells of Lon
don, was the next witness. He testi
fied that In 1899 he examined Thaw
at Clarldges, London, and found
him suffering from a mental dis
turbance of some kind. '
At 10:86 the defense had all the
direct evidence . In and Littleton be
gan reading the hypothetical - ques
tion to three experts for the defense.
Dr. Wells and an Insanity expert
testified that Thaw's condition was
one of recurrent -Insanity. Miss Lil
lian McBrrde, who nursed Thaw at
the Devonshire hospital, took the
stand and corroborated Dr. Wells
concerning Thaw's mental' condition.

Thaw In Rome and that he was Irra

hybridising, breeding for dairy
production, breeding hybrid cattle,
breeding for meet production' and
co-operstlv work In plant and aril

ults of the labors of the commission

on a motfon made by Attorney Wit-
son, Mays' attorney, on the grounds
that no evidence had been submitted
by the government which tended to

Heney opened the morning's ses
sion by asking Judge Hunt to Instruct
the Jury to find Mays not guilty as

Chicago, Jan. 27. Three disastrous
fires, causing a property loss ot over
a million and a half dollars, occurred
In this country between midnight and
morning today.
- One is still beyond control. The
Standard OH tanks at Baltimore
caught fire early this morning and,
fanned by ft gale, the blaxe is still
raging. One man has been reported
dead.
At Portland, Me., the second big
fire within a week occurred, a fire In
the business section of the city caus
ing a loss of almost 8800,000. By
8:45 a. m. It was under control and
was confined to one block.
At Chicago one fireman was killed
and three Injured and property to the
value of 8500,000 destroyed In fire In
the .printing establishment of W. P.
Dunn & Co. ' The flames spread to
the Florence hotel and drovo the oo
cupants into the street in scanty gar
ments. The magnificent new corn
exchange . building was damaged.
Twenty persons were Injured.
: At noon the fire was still raging,
the flames leaping 00 feet In the
air. It Is estimated that 600,000
gallons of oil have been consumed
so far.

country. He states that he has visit

Camas prairies are far ahead of any
thing that he hps seen. He also
states that the prairie country Is well
adapted to the- dairy business and
predicts that this Industry will .be one
of the principal sources of income to

with Ruefs attorneys that tomorrow
he will ask Judge Lawlor to appoint
a commission to take the deposition
of Artie Latham, formerly Ruefs
chaffauer, who is supposed to know
the details of the passing of the briber
money in the United Railroads case
from Tirey I Ford to Ruet
The motion Is based on affidavits
from Detective Burns and others, to
the effect that Latham is very anx
ious to leave the city and that his
t stlmony is of the utmost importance
