    Fred Collins, who has been
working in the local warehouses,
left Monday for Arlington where
he will remain a few days before
going to Silverton, Ore,, to spend
the rest of the winter. Ralph
Ellsworth went along with him.
Mrs. Sherman Wade of Qlex
has been in the city during the
past week, the guest of her sis
ters, the Misses Ranney. Mrs.
Wade expects to return home on
Saturday.
Lester Wade made the home
folks at Olex a visit on last Sat
urday. Miss Hattie Loftin has return
ed to Condon after a visit with
her parents who live a few miles
north of Rock Creek.
Louis Doonar, at one time pro
prietor of the telephone com
pany but now of Bandon, arrived
Monday evening to attend busi
ness matters for a few days.
The invariable remark of one
person meeting another on the
streets of Condon during the
first part of the week was, "This
is fine weather, isn't it?" Ahd
as invariably came the reply,
'Tes fine," but we'll have to
make up for this later."
Mrs. J.W.Hire was a passenger
on Monday's local bound for
Arlington as the guest of Mrs.
W. H. Morrison.

Editor Stewart of the Fossil
Journal arrived in Condon Mon
day evening from Portland where
he has been during the past two
weeks as a witness in the land
fraud trials. He said that the
case, implicating the officers of
the Butte Creek Co., was pract;-
cally over.
During the past week the stage
line between this city and Fossil
has been crowded with Fossilites
who were returning from Port
land where they had been sum
moned to appear before the Fed
eral Court It is said that fully
half of Fossil was in Portland
during the trials and that the
Wheeler County seat was practi
cally deserted.
Mrs. Edward Dunn returned
Monday evening from Albany,
where she has been spending a
week visiting with Mrs. Miller,
formerly Miss Mollie Gibbons.
Jacob Schroeder, of the Kerr,
Gilford warehouse at Mikkalo,
was in town Monday evening.
Hallie Rice returned on Mon
day's train from a week's visit
with friends at The Dalles.
Mrs. C. 0. Portwood returned
Saturday evening from a week's
visit in Portland.
W. L Barker returned from a
business trip to Portland on Sat
urday. . While in the city he at
tended the meetings of the Hard
ware Dealers of Oregon.
M. M. Bledsoe, the Baptist
missionary, for Oregon, preach
ed two interesting sermons on
Sunday last before united con
gregations. The morning ser
vices were held in the Congrega
tional church and the evening in
the Baptist church. Both church
es were crowded to seating ca
pacity and the missionary's
words were well received.
We notice by one of last week's
Oregonians that the Kerr, Gif
ford Warehouse Co. had shipped
the first car of wheat to leave
Roosevelt, Wn. Roosevelt is
across the river from Arlington
and bids fair to be a very good
town in a short time as there is
a big country behind it
Mrs. M. J. Simmons, who has
been quite ill for some time, re
turned home Wednesday accom
panied by her daughter, Miss
Laura Simmons. Fossil Journal.
J. C. Jones was in The Dalles
Saturday on business.
M. D. Leonard transacted busi
ness in The Dalles last week.
I' Henry Saunders of Butte,
Mont, was in . town last week.
He is a half brother of B. K.
Searcy and on Saturday after
noon took the stage for Mayville
where he will visit with Jim Jones
and other relatives whom he has
hot seen for 16 years. He will
remain in the Mayville country
for a couple of weeks.
- Born at Mayville on January
23, to Mr. and Mrs. Art Smith,
a boy.
The warehouse belonging to S.
B. Barker collapsed on Saturday
evening about six oclock making
a noise that could be heard for
several blocks. It seems that
the building being full of wheat
was too much weight for the
supports and the entire struct
ure slid to one side.
E. M. Larkin was a caller last
week and ordered his Globe sent
to Arlington in the future. :
T. A. Brandon was a caller the
latter part of last week and or
dered fifty-two copies of the
Globe sent to his address at Ajax.

Edith McMorris and Zeda
Sweetin won envious records in
all their school work during the
last term of school and both have
reason to feel proud. The girls,
who are about 12 years of age,
were the only pupils in the
seventh grade who were excused
from taking all examinations.
Miss Stevens of La Grande ar
rived in Condon on Monday's
local and began her duties as
book keeper with the S. B. Bar
ker Cofcon Tuesday. Miss Clarke
who has had charge of the office
work for several years, will take
a much needed rest and will visit
with relatives in Portland.
