ROCK CHEEK HM VS. UNI
Frank Christy Hat Dssperatt)
Fight with Big Cat aa a
Bracer Before Break
fast. rrank Lhnsty, who lives on
the John Day river at the mouth
of Rock Creek, was aroused from
peaceful slumbers a few morn
ings ago by Ihe baying of his
wolf hounds, and on going out
to investigate, saw that his dog
had treed what he thought was
a coyote.
Arming himself with a club
he went to the place of combat
to help the dogs kill the animal,
On approaching the animals the
varmint jumped into the creek
bed, ran 50 yards and crawled up
on the bank, with , the pack of
hounds at its heels bringing the
animal at bay in a clump of sage
brush. Christy dashed into the
brush and dealt a terrific blow on
the varmit which caused it to
seek other shelter some distance,
but still followed by its pursuers.
Frank waded into the brush with
renewed force.
To his great surprise a huge
lynx leaped straight at him and
but for the timely assistance of
large hound that seized the
big cat by one of its hind legs,
the hunter would have no doubt
received serious injuries.
So warm was the battle raging
that Christy decided to summon
aid and so called his nearest
neighbor, Mose McKinney, and
his two sons, Herbert, and Fred.
They all returned to the scene of
battle reinforced by two large
wolf hounds. The lynx was soon
overpowered but not without a
wicked fight up to the very last
As soon as it saw the crowd ap
proaching, it started to run but
was quickly overtaken by the
hounds. The lynx seized the
argest dog around the neck
with both fore feet burying its
claws deep into the flesh. The
wolf hound never uttered a sound
but fastened its jaws on the
neck of the cat and held him to
the ground until dead.
