The Mitchell Sentinel has
made its reappearance into the
newspaper field of Easern Ore
gon. This office acknowledges
having received the bright and
newsy exchange. We wish the
Sentinel all kinds of success. In
its leading editorial the Sentinel's
policy is "to wage war against
the wrong and uphold the right "
In . reference to the coming
election, it says, "We will try to
be in the right, we will ad
vocate the election of good,
honest men to fill the offices, and
like all good Republicans we will
be in favor of an economical
management of municipal,
county and state affairs."
Elections and marriages are
just alike, says an exchange;
there is nothing the candidate
will not promise before hand.
The somewhat disturbed finan
cial situation in the East and
South is causing industrial in
stitutions in the older states to
investigate the opportunities for
a more advantageous home on
the great . Pacific Northwest
These facts have been indicated
through the large correspondence
on this subject received by the
Portland Commercial Club dur
ing the last sixty days.
Any man can take a news
paper. It is the cheapest thing
he can buy. Every time his hen
cackles and has laid an ' egg, his
paper is paid for for that week.
It costs less than the price of a
postage stamp. It comes to you
every week, rain or shine, calm
or stormy. No matter what
happens, it enters your door a
welcome friend, full of sunshine,
cheer and interest It opens the
door of your neighborhood and
puts you face to face with the
people and the events. It short
ens the long winter nights. It
is your adviser, gossiper and
friend. No man is just to his
children who does not give them
a local paper. No man is good
to himself who does not take a
home paper. Ex. The soundest
advice that can be added is be
good to yourself during this new
year by reading the Globe a live
county paper that prints all the
county news.
The Oregon State Grange op
poses the nomination of Schuebel
of Oregon City for U. S. Attor
ney to succeed W. C. Bristol on
the grounds that he is "not a
fit" for the position and protests
will be sent to Washington. Ac
cording to the members of the
grange, the officials of that or
ganization are in possession of
facts, which when presented it
is claimed will surpass the ob
jections of Senator Fulton,
Congressmen Ellis and Hawley.
Secretary Taf t has just bought
a guaranteed weight-carrying
horse. Looks as though he meant
to stay in the race.
If Secretary Cortelyou wants
to make himself popular with
the real "interests" of the coun
try, he ought to arrange for one
those money panics to be re
lieved about convention time.
It might not be altogether
chivalrous, but of course the
mere man has a right to promise
to be a brother to them during
leap year.
One of the current magazines
has an article on "What Lobsters
Eat" Any chorus girl can tell
you, if you don't care to buy the
magazine.
I The immigration to Oregon
this year ought to be double
that of last In no other state
has every character of crop yield
ed so enormously and command
ed such a high price. People in
the older communities are dis
posed to move, and Oregon
should get more than its propor
tion of new citizens, but to ac
complish this all the commercial
bodies must work in harmony
and individuals must participate
through private correspondence,
which is the strongest influence
ofalL
The congressional race in the
second Oregon district is now on.
The announcement of the candi
dacy of T. T. Geer of this city
opens wide the gates. Portland
will now groom her strongest man
in the hope of winning with a
divided eastern Oregon field. It
looks as though Mr. Geer is play
ing into the hands of Portland
against the interests of his
"home", eastern Oregon, for
with two candidates in the field
from this section of the state
Portland will have the advant
age and unless some strenuous
work is done, the entire congres
sional and senatorial delegation
from Oregon will come from
Portland and that immediate
vicinity. Congressman Ellis has
the decided advantage over any
other candidate so far, but a di
vided field in Eastern Oregon
will give Portland the "under
hold."
Ellis is now in the harness.
He is a bona-fide and pioneer
resident of this district
He has the prestige of having
served before in Congress. .
He can accomplish more than
any new man and is therefore
the logical candidate. East Ore
gonian.
A new law has just gone into
effect which strikes hard at the
county press the placing of one
cent stamp on every paper which
goes to a subscriber who is in
arrears for more than one year.
It has been the policy of the
Globe management to print in
its publication from week
all the reliable news, to
stand behind the fundamental
principles of good government,
and especially to work for the
general welfare of Gilliam
county and Condon. The paper
that makes these features its
predominating policy is entitled
to the confidence of the public,
coupled with liberal circulation
and patronage. The circulation
and patronage, we are pleased
to acknowledge, have been ex
ceedingly gratifying during the
past year, the Globe's circula
tion having increased in a won
derful manner. It is the in
tention of the nanagement to
keep on with the good work un
til every one is thoroughly con
vinced that the Globe is the
only real county paper in Gilliam
county. In order to prove the
statement we are going to give
subscribers all the important
news from the different sections
of the county. We know your
wants and know that you will
appreciate our efforts. . In return
see that your subscription is in
good standing.
