District Attorney Jerome is
now looking for twelve men who
did not read the account of the
first Thaw trial If he can find
them, they probably will turn
out to be the only sensible men in
New York.
The statement of the National
banks of Portland on December
3rd proved that they had ample
cash more than the most en
thusiastic had anticipated. The
same is true of banks through
out the State.
October and November statis
tics for wheat and flour ship
ments from Portland and Puget
Sound ports are particularly, in
teresting as showing the im
mense resources being converted
into actual cash in Oregon and
Washington. 7,434,691 bushels
of wheat and 640,012 barrels of
flour are the exact figures, yet it
must be remembered that the
crop is only just getting under
way in earnest
The meeting of Oregon busi
ness men at the Portland Com'
mercial Club on the 1st, followed
by the announcement of Gov.
Chamberlain that the present
holidays would be discontinued
after the 14th, have been the
most discussed events of the
week. That the representatives
from forty communities should
unanimously unite in resolutions
forcefully expressing confidence
in the outlook and financial
strength of the entire state is in
itself indicative of constantly bet
tering conditions.

This ought to be the busiest
and most fruitful session of Con
gress in many years. Fortunate
ly it is a long session. There are
predictions that it will get away
by the first of June, and this be
ing a presidential year, it may be
true, providing the members 'do
not get too eloquent. Of course the
first and most pressing subject is
currency legislation. The Pres
ident has outlined in his message
what should be done, but there
are indications that this subject
will be discussed at considerable
length no doubt longer than
necessary. It is thought the
Speaker will not give a chance
for the discussion of the tariff.
Ship subsidy will get a hearing.
The Panama Canal, federal drain
age from the Lake to the Gulf
Waterway, federal grain inspect
ion and the modification of the
Sherman Law are all clamoring
for a hearing. , The appropria
tion committees have their work
cut out for them the distribution
of about a billion dollars.
Don't miss getting one of those
White sewing machines at your
own figure. Call at the building
formerly occupied by a millinery
store across the street from The
S. B. Barker Co. store.
