The Sixtieth Congress opened
Monday morning. The striking
scenes of the day was the fight
for the speakership of the House,
between Joseph G. Cannon and
the democratic representative,
John Sharp Williams. Cannon
was re-elected by an overwhelm
ing majority, and Joe began tel
ling the assembly what's what
The Democrats denounced the
rules of the last Congress but
when in came to a vote the same
were adopted.
For the first time in some
years a united, active and honor
able delegation will present the
claims, and look after the inter
ests Oregon in Congress. Hav
ing emerged from the valley of
humiliation incident to land
fraud disclosures our people are
now in position to hold up their
heads and ask, through their
representatives, for what they
want with the reasonable assur
ance that they will receive re
spectful consideration.
At the meeting of the repre
sentatives of the different com
mercial bodies of the state the
first of the week, was shown the
great confidence being placed in
the Portland Clearing House dur
ing the financial stringency. The
body decided not to ask the Gov
ernor to call an extra session of
the legislature at this time, but
after debating the bank situation
and the need of resuming judi
cial business, resolutions were
adopted and have already been
presented to the Governor, re
questing him to continue the le
gal holidays for a period not to
exceed ten days after banks of
the East resume specie pay
ments. Governor Chamberlain
has already made it known that
he would not call an extra ses
sion of the Legislature as he
deemed such an act one of quest
ionable propriety. It is his opi
nion that the holidays will be
continued until the first of the
year, however, he shall follow
the general concensus of opinion
of the people of the state at
large. The Governor has also
enforced the idea that the de
mand for the continuation of the
holidays comes even more strong
ly from business interests than
from the banks.

to hear in a whisper iu a few sec
onds.
The doctor then called for crip
pies on crutches and Mrs. Tout
Ferguson reppoiuLd.
She was afflicted with that giant
disease, rheumatism, for 12 years,
and she was unable to walk, hav
ing to be carried to the opera house
in a chair, perfectly helpless, and
was operated on with medicine for
20 minutes and walked off the
stage free from pain and stiffness,
followed by the wondering crowd
To say that the audience was as
tonished and wild would be putting
it mildly, The doctor was warmly
congratulated. It seemed like a
dream but it was real.- Ministers
and doctors were in the audience
and they seemed as well pleased
as any.
