Prof. Joseph H. Drake, of the
law department of the Univers
ity of Michigan, wants to crown
Theodore Roosevelt king of this
country. Well, he might pick
out a worse fellow than Teddy.
The Dalles Chronicle.
Canada has sent a special en
voy to Japan to tell the Mikado
that he must limit immigration
or there will be an abrogation of
the treaty. That is certainly a
most impudent mission.
Would Mr. Cortelyou be as
hysterically active in relieving
the financial distress of "poverty
lane" as he was in relieving
Wall Street?
A verdict of $14,000 damage
against five college students for
hazing a classmate is likely to
discourage this form of amuse
ment in that particular college
and perhaps others. The Illinois
court responsible for, this deci
sion, has done a public service.
The Philippines are starting in
on their promised home rule.
Cuba is wondering -what they
will do with it
"There is need of more cur
rency," declares the New York
Times. Indisputably!
Oklahoma was admitted into
the Union as a state on Novem
ber 16, thus increasing the num
ber to 46 states. The additional
star will not appear on the flag
till after July 4th next Okla
homa comes in with a . constitu
tion regulating corporations, re
stricting exploiting combinations,
and is so socialistic that its
career will be watched for some
time. Nevertheless the new
state is welcomed into the Union.
Now is time to see to it that
all your farm tools and machi
nery are carefully put away for
the winter. Did you ever stop
to count up how much money
you have invested m your
machinery? If not, do so and
you will see how important it is
that you take special pains to
prolong its term of usefulness.
Lawlessness seems to have
broken the tranquility of several
Eastern Oregon towns. For ex
ample the terrifying scenes and
gun plays, a reminiscence of for
mer days when the cowboy ruled
this section of the country, which
took place at lone last week was
certainly a disgrace to humanity.
Such actions have been brought
closer to home and, although no
gun play was carried out, " the
scenes were equally disgraceful.
The wild, loud shouting and pro
fane language was a horror to
all within range of hearing to
say nothing of insulting to wom
en who happened to be on the
streets. -
