Senator Carmack of Tenneisee
deserves the undying gratitude of
tbe American people for bli work
in defeating the ahip subsidy bill
Not being able to live on a salary
of 15,000 a year Senator Spooner of
Wisconsin has tendered hit resig
nation a United Slatei Senator.
The Bowerman judicial gerry
mamler has very naturally raised
a storm of protest from the tax
payers and public spirited oitisens
who are opposed to the question
able methods employed by the Sen
ator in strengthening his political
maohine in this district.
Small pox has broken out in
tbe Missouri Legislature, but that
isn't halt as bad as some ol the
things that have broken into the
Oregon Legislature during the past
three years.
It is estimated that during the
year ending June 30th, 1906, no
less than 4,200 people have been
killed in railway aooidentsin Amer
ica. While a few of these cataslro
phes are doubtless unavoidable,
the greater portion of them are
due to criminal carelessness. In
transporting goods, wares and uier
candise from one end of the conti
nent to the other the common car
riers are not expected to exercise
the same degree of care as they
would in transporting human be
ings. In the latter case they are
expectod to exercise extraordinary
care and their failure to do so
should invariably mean indictment
and punishment for their iuexouse
able negligence.
In a recent address to tbe stu
dents of the University of Michi
gan C has. E. Hughes, the reform
Governor of New York, gave ex
pression to sentiments whioh will
hardly meet with the approval of
of the big chief of Gilliam oounty.
The Governor said in part as fol
lows: "I believe that the people
are done with those men who use
publio office entirely for their own
benefit. I was was not elected to
play at politics, and I am not do
ing it. I was not elected to build
a political machine and I an not
building one. I was not elected
to set one faction against another
and I have not tried to do so,"
