(rOUTICAL ADVKKKIIIKMKMT)
It will be remembered, and particu
larly by those religiously and charitably
inclined, that lion. John 11. Aitkin of
Huntington, now seeking the nomina
tion for State treasurer on the republi
can ticket, ha liberally a.slsted more
call upon public charity than any
man in Eastern Oregon, llei bank
er and a I o a president of one of the larg
est commercial Institution in the Stat)
of Oregon, yet hi pure baa always
lieen open to the apical of misery and
distressed humanity. Solicitor for the
variuna churches have never appealed
to him in vain, lie gives to all of them
regardless of their faith. To the Salva
tion Army be ha been friend at all
time.
Let us go a little further. A the re
presentative of ft large aggregation of
capital and president ii one ii .lie larg
eat't merchantile establishment in the
North chI, Mr, Aitkin has loaned hund
red of thousands of dollar to booie
builders and needy rancher who were
troggling to get on their feet. He ha
protected hi bank but be it taid to his
everlasting credit that he ha never
foreclosed mortgage on some poor
man' meager holding nor forced a
helpies debtor to the wall. Mo aorrow
ful widow with her hungry children
have gone supper lesi to bed through
the action of hi bank or merchantile
eatahlirhnieut. On the contrary the
tt re ha always been open to them and
credit was extended almost indefinitely.
During the lianl lime ol a few year
ago when the price ol stock were low
it wa in hi power to break a number
ol Nioikmeii and Uktt advautage of con
dition and several ttockmen offered to
let him take their stock for his claii
against them but he helped them
through the bard times and today they
are among the leading stockmen in
Eahteru Oregon

Mr. Aitkin ha made money for bia
company and money for his bank but it
has all been legitimate and clean money
not one cent having been wrung from
the distressed and poverty ttrirken the
pauper and the widow.
Mr. Aitkin propose an amendment
forcinu the state treasurer to deposit the
fund nnder direction of a state board,
the ink-rest to be paid to the state. Thi
may be harking back to the day of tbe
ancient Spartans, bat it i honest and
the people know it. Ah Mr. Aitkin de
sire ia the flat salary paid by tbe state
lor hi hervicea not the immense 'eraft'
gathered in by the stale treasurer in the
