la Walla, were In Portland last week in
the interest of the portage road. From
Portland they went to 8alem to confer
with the etate portage board is regard
to the work. To the atate board the gen
tlemen above named made a proposition
to organise a private ceeapear properly
financed, to build the road, the compa
ny to pat ap a sufficient bond to guaran
tee the falfUlment of it contract. The
company will also nndertake to raiee

cfition to the original appropriation to
boild and eqoip the road and also to
complete the work In time to move neit
seasons crop. When the work is com
pleted it is to be tarned over to the
state. It seems to be ap to the portage

Mariner Smith and Blalock are

eling man, came out from Portland Sun
day and went on out to bis Ajaz ranch
to look after hia interests there. With
him was his friend, Mr. Lash, of Port
land, who came out with a view to ac
quiring a tract of Gilliam county real
estate. If successful in finding what he
wants Mr. Laeb will bring his family
here and be prepared to get after his
share of the general prosperity which
the new railroad is certain to bring to
this section.

Scotchmen Meet
A meeting of local Scotchmen was
held here Tuesday to make preliminary
arrangements for the big Caledonian
gathering to be held here this Fall. The
date has not been definitely fixed bat it
probably be on October SSth. It is pro
posed to make this meeting the most
succetsfal event of the kind ever held in
Oregon and a large number of visitors
from different sections of the state are
expected to attend.
