So far as gambling is concerned
Portland is a closed town. For
years city and county officials have
blustered and played polities
preachers have preached, editor
Lave written, women have wept,
reformers have shouted theuidve
hoarse and. losers at th the games
have brought suit against the
gamblers for double the amount of
their losses, and still the little
and big games rolled merrily on.
Bat last Saturday the thing was
done in less than an hour without
fuss or trouble and it took but one
Vi-a to dft'tt hi firat nameie
Tom and be Vaa recently elected
sheriff of Multnomah county. It
remains to. be seen whether -the
games will remain closed perma
nently or not but the fact remains
that Word closed the games with
one word. He: quietly went to the
gamblers in pereon and said,
"close!" and they closed forthwith.

Do You Know
that We Carry
Rather than let it to waste,
Mr. Brvan has decided to take' the
medicine prescribed by Dr. Parker
and ajrreed to by the other doctors,
at ths St. Louis consultation, but
he says he has no faith in the stuff
anrl believes the doctor to be a
quack. The medicine will only
last him until November, however,
nd when the last dose is taken he
-expects to write a new prescription
- for himself and the country and
commence at once to place the
medicine where he th:nks it will do
the most good. . He believes his
prescription will act as an antidote
far the staff with which he is now
filling his system. .
