Portland go to show that the queen

Mies Mae Maaon, who was elected
queen of the Carnival now in prog
ress at Portland, collapsed on the
eve of her coronation and ia a vic

couldn't stand the strain. Miss
Maybclle Douglas, who was queen
.of the Carnival at Portland two
years ago, recently resigned her po
sition in a Portland restaurant,
deserted her home and went to
Spokane where she married a balf
breed Negro. She, presumably,
was not satisfied with the notoriety
she acquired as queen of the carni
val so married a coon to secure
more. Yea, it's time to cut out
this make-believe queen business
in America. One healthy bodied,

out a liring in the crowded centers
of the East or of Europe. It has
ever been thus. The crank of to
day is the hero of to-morrow. The
saint of to-day was the crucified
-one of yesterday. The man who
dares protest against the establish
ed order of things is looked upon as
either an anarchist or a fool and we
people of to-day, a majority of us,
in sp'te of the high degree of civili
zation which has been forced upon
us by men with new ideas in all
ages of the world, in spite of the
, wonderful progress of this age
which we all admit, shut our eyes
and put our fingers in our ears
when a new idea is presented for
our consideration and cry, 'Away
with it; w hatever is is right because
it is."

were the apakera of the day. Not be
ing pioneera they did not apeak on pio

compliment these gentlemen bestowed
on those worthy old people who in torn
took them to their hearts and gave them
of their beet, gratitude and good cheer.
The remineacencea of the pioneers at
the meetings as well as at the camp fires
were very interesting coming aa they did
from people who crossed the plains as
early as 1843 and 1845. Not the least
entertaining was Grandma Haw k a pio
neer of 1845 who recounted incidents of
the plains and privations which were
the lot of the sett lere and by special re
qnestsanga hym in the Chinook Indian
dialect (Jargon) greatly entertaining the
younger generation especially. She
with Mrs. Vickers, of Lone Bock, who
crossed the plains in the same year, 1845,
as did Mr. McCoy, of Pine Creek, was
the center of interest throughout the
meeting:.
